| 547786 | 2007-05-06 18:27:00 | Hello members I am doing a business merger which will take me away from my home office. Still, I like to be able to take work(architectural design and office work) home and this most likely every day. As the other partners in the merger are on PC's I like(need to) to keep some of the windows apps including the arch design prog. Now; what macbook would I go for? Would I best install Parallels or VMWare to run those apps. What other (window based)Laptops would be suitable and grunty, reliable? I am very interested to hear from your experiences. Many thanks NT |

Many thanks NT Install Parallels - it will run either XP or Vista with no performance drop off. I am currently running it on my iMac. Depending on how much grunt you need I would be looking at the MacBook Pro range - either 15 or 17 Inch with 2GB of RAM. ArchiCAD and Vector Workx which are both Xplatform. What architectural programs are the other partners running? |

What architectural programs are the other partners running? Hi winmac Thanks The others are working on Revit and I am using Nemetschek which are both windows based. So my CAD prog and office(just want to keep so I can synchronise with office on my second machine) could run on Parallels, or VmWare. The cost of the MacBook Pro is just a bit prohibitive! So Parallels with any graphics are running well on your machine? Are you using 2GB ram? And could I use 23 or 30 inch screens? Thanks NT |

| 547789 | 2007-05-06 23:00:00 | if the programs you are running require high use of the graphics card rhen I suggest running windows through bootcamp. Parralls only emulates a graphics card. Vista areo won't work under parralls either but will in bootcamp. Parralls will use the windows installation thats running under bootcamp so you wouldn't need to do a double installation. As for external display, taken from the apple website. This is for the macbook. "Extended desktop and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 1920 x 1200 pixels on an external display" |

| 547790 | 2007-05-07 01:37:00 | Thanks plod Does it mean; if you use bootcamp(with xp), and install Parallels with XP guest, Parallels(guest) will use the installed xp from bootcamp(which is on another partition(or HDD), is that right? NT correct, this is for the latest version of parallels. So whatever you are doing can't be handled in parallels you can boot in to windows and still have the same install with all your files |

Thanks NT At this stage I haven't got any graphics software loaded although I will be getting Adobe CS3 Standard for Mac when it becomes available. I will probably reload my old design stuff on XP Pro under parallels as I still have some work that I do in Freehand which Adobe is no longer making. I have 1GB of RAM at this stage but may add more when I see how the system goes. |

| 547793 | 2007-05-07 07:31:00 | Now; what macbook would I go for? Would I best install Parallels or VMWare to run those apps . NT To answer your MacBook question since the MacBook Pro is too pricey, I would suggest the 13 inch 2 . 0Ghz White MacBook with a RAM upgrade to 2GB of RAM because 1GB is ok but 2GB is better . |

| 547794 | 2007-05-07 09:26:00 | If you look at the Mac Rumors Buyers Guide (http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/), you will see that both the MacBook and MacBook Pro are due to be updated in the next month or so. I would wait until then, particularly if you are wanting a MacBook because the GPU will be significantly better. | maccrazy (6741) | ||
| 547795 | 2007-05-07 10:49:00 | so if you're going to get a macbook and then use bootcamp to run windows anyway, wouldn't it be more cost effective to simply get a windows-based laptop? of course if you use mac at home i can understand why you'd want mac | motorbyclist (188) | ||
