547537 2007-05-06 09:23:00 Don't worry, pctek did it too :P...

People these days, so eager to reply. :D

547538 2007-05-06 09:34:00 Anyway, here are the rest of the specs:

x1 Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 2.13Ghz
Looks good to me.
x1 Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATAII 7200RPM hard drive 16MB cache
I'd prefer Western Digital myself, but thats fine too =P
x2 Transcend 1GB DDR2 667 Ram
All good, unless heavy gaming/overclocking are a priority, then I'd look into some nice Corsair modules ; though that would mean the price most likely quadrupling
x1 Asus P5VD2-MX motherboard ---- ASUS P5L 1394 Intel 945P (?)
x1 Asus DRW-1608P3S DVD writer
x1 ASUS 7900GS 256MB Video Card
Is there any particular reason you've chosen to go for this old card? Check this card out www.qmb.co.nz , thats from the same store. It's a new card (XFX 8600GT XXX Edition), it's clock frequencies are way higher and it performs tons better in games. 3dMark 06 scores prove it too. You'd be surprised but this card also actually works out about $20 cheaper than that 7900gs.
x1 Raidmax Ninja 918 Gaming Tower Case 520W
x1 Silverstone Element 500W Power Supply
Good PSU, and good decision on not sticking with that one that comes with the Ninja Case
x1 AOC 19" 193FW Widescreen LCD Monitor 5ms
x1 Logitech X-530 Speaker System with Subwoofer 5:1
x1 Logitech MX Revolution Cordless Laser Desktop Mouse
x1 Eclispse Illuminated Keyboard*

OK, there.

Hmm... I couldn't manage to edit that reply again. Maybe theres some bug with using it in Firefox or maybe I'm just not using it right? My mouse cursor would only turn into that hourglass thing when I hit the button to apply the changes and it didn't do anything. I thought my net was timing out or something but that wasn't the case. Anyways, it won't let me edit it anymore anyway, it's been past the 15 minute limitation.

547539 2007-05-06 09:41:00 Well I don't plan on overclocking absolutely anything.

I don't get it, a better card - for cheaper? NEVER. If it is really better then why am I getting the 7900gs? Are you sure everything else will run the 8600gt?

I'm gonna need a second opinion on this :P
--Wolf-- (128)
547540 2007-05-06 09:49:00 No wonder Ascent do free shipping, their prices are so darn expensive! I just made a cart up with the exact some parts, and it turned out quite a bit more expensive. Then E-Mail them and haggle... the advertised price on an item is NOT the be all and end all price, that is what the store would like, they will go lower to get your sale. jeez, people these days... I got $500 off from all the parts on my PC by this. and I would go with Ascent, if you are spending so much on a PC then you really should get it from somewhere that is not going to screw you... :2cents:

And that is not really "uber pwnage" I would have to say that spec is currently low-mid range enthusiast and in a year (if you are lucky) you will be sitting there thinking... and I called this "uber pwnage" I can guarantee it

The keyboard, if you want a good KB, get a Logitech G15, they are illuminated, to type on they are like nothing I have ever typed on.

The speakers, they are OK for a cheap, good sound quality, good power/volume, but they are not all that great for the high end range...

547541 2007-05-06 09:55:00 Actually, many people have said high-mid range to low-high range.

Well I think I'm already settled with QMB...no guarantees they will screw me over like you claim

547542 2007-05-06 10:06:00 If I'm not mistaken, you chose this motherboard, yes? . qmb . co . nz/p . aspx?106107" target="_blank">www . qmb . co . nz

That has a PCI Express x 16 Slot, so yes the 8600GT XXX should run fine with that . It should run fine with everything else too . It doesn't need any extra power connecter or anything like that, thats another advantage of it . The PCI Express slot is capable of supplying it with enough power . Your 500 Watt PSU will be enough (I've got 520 Watts myself AND I do some reasonably extensive overclocking AND my PSU doesn't even compare to the likes of Silverstone,so this shouldn't be much of an issue at all) . Software conflicts: nothing I can think of . It'll run nicely in Vista, what with DX10 and all, but if you choose to run it in XP (I'm currently running in XP) then there also isn't any problems there . You can find Official Driver releases from Nvidia for both OS's .

For further comparison between the two cards, maybe copy paste a link for the exact card you're looking at .

As for the comments on QMB : I have shopped with them on a few occasions and so have alot of my friends . Haven't had much issues with them if any at all, though I can't say that any of us have tried to make any warranty claims or anything like that so far, though I'm sure that if you undergo the right procedures, you can get your way as long as you are in your rights to do so . Only thing that I don't like about them is their communication issues and their disregard for customers, instore and on the phone . Email too actually .

I emailed them asking with a question regarding a graphics card I had purchased through them some time ago (I don't even recall what that question was now ^^) and they responded with complete babble, then linked me to the manufacturers site and told me that I can find what I want from there, if not, I can email Asus (What great service!) .

I also called them up a few times with different issues . Most of the phone operator didn't understand what I was talking about and had to ask someone else (this is fine, as I understand it's maybe a family business and the person on the phones has no knowledge of computers) , but what I didn't like was how she would drift off while I was talking and randomly start talking to someone else in another language .

In store is kind of alright . I dealt with some d00d called Kevin who had a significantly better grasp over his english than the others and was able to answer alot of my questions . He also gave me good discounts and kept a professional manner .

547543 2007-05-06 10:13:00 I did say enthusiast, for a general home PC that will be relatively high end. BTW you are buying and almost obsolete GFX card... The_End_Of_Reality (334)
547544 2007-05-06 10:25:00 Hi, i bought the P5vd2-mx mobo from qmb with 2 512mb sticks of ddr667 ram.Didn,t realize mobo doesn,t support it,what effect will it have on it?The manual states it supports max resolution of 2048x1536@75hz.I,m using a palit 7600gs 512mb graphics with a new Samsung 19in widescreen monitor using dvi lead.I also delt with Kelvin who is the manager there, havn,t had any issues so far . mrplane (11854)
547545 2007-05-06 10:27:00 Obsolete GFX card? Being which one? The 7900GS or the 8600GT? I've just decided to change it to the 8600GT, incase you missed that post

And it can run all new release games (that I want anyway) on the highest settings with no slowdown, and that was on the 7900GS, which according to my knowledge of counting, 8600 is more than 7900, which means it should run even better.

And Deathwish, I will be running XP until Vistas sp2 comes out. And as long as QMB give me a good working product, that's all that counts right?

And here are the exact links for both cards:

7900GS:
www.qmb.co.nz
8600GT:

--Wolf-- (128)
547546 2007-05-06 10:38:00 I believe that when David said 'obsolete GFX card', he was referring to the 7900GS. The 8600GT is a new card. Yeah, as long as they give you a good working product then that really is all that counts. If something does happen within the warranty period, there is always the consumer guarantees act to fall back to isn't there?

Wolf, thats a pretty cool 7900 you were looking at, but the 8600GT XXX Edition still beats that. Besides the higher GPU Frequency and the much lower price, other advantages are Shader Model 4.0 (though you won't notice this till you eventually make the upgrade to DX10 - Yeah I'm actually waiting till sp2 for Vista comes out too till I make the move), and ofcourse the HDCP support through the DVI ports. I don't think that the 7900 in comparison (or a handful of many other cards for that matter) have HDCP support enabled, meaning you may have trouble viewing higher resolution materials later on with Vista as one of the requirements (eg. for Blu-ray movies) is that the devices have HDCP support.
