547870 2007-05-06 12:59:00 Is there a limit to the number of PCs that can be networked using Win XP Home? bpt2 (6653)
547871 2007-05-06 14:20:00 Nope, not that I know of.

The only thing different really between XP Home / Pro is the Security (Simple File-sharing).

547872 2007-05-06 20:21:00 Myth: Windows XP Home Edition only allows 5 computers on a peer-to-peer network, and Windows XP Professional only allows 10 computers.

Fact: There's no limit to the number of computers that can network with Windows XP Home Edition and Professional.

Explanation: Windows XP Home Edition allows a maximum of 5 other computers to connect to its shared resources simultaneously. Windows XP Professional allows a maximum of 10 other computers to connect to its shared resources simultaneously. Computers that aren't actively connected to a computer's shared resources don't count against the limit. When a computer disconnects from a shared resource, it no longer counts against the limit. For details, see the article Inbound Connections Limit in Windows XP in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

There are ways around this :xmouth:

547875 2007-05-21 08:31:00 I have 6 XP Home computers with nics, one printer with a network card and a 24 port hub.
How do I set up the network to link them all together? Do I need to assign IP addresses?
Should I make one of the PCs act as a server?

547876 2007-05-21 10:13:00 Depends if youre on broadband or dialup if u want them on the net.

If BB then leave them on auto, if dialup, give each one an ip manually.

And if u wanna share a folder on each make sure the workgroup names are the same.

547877 2007-05-21 11:10:00 There's no internet connection, just a LAN. So do I just give them IPs like 192.168.x.x
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
DNS??

Thats it just put the ips in manually and give them 192.168.0.x etc. And subnet 255.255.255.0.

Dont worry about DNS, thats only for the net. Leave it blank.

I think you'll only need ips if you're going to play games on each.

547879 2007-05-21 13:09:00 No, you'll need to give them IPs.
XP doesnt support IPX/SPX out of the box.. just assigning each an IP address (Each one incrementing by one) with No gateway, No DNS, just a subnet mask and an IP address should get you sorted :)
