| 547743 | 2007-05-06 11:32:00 | I tried to build a PC with core 2 duo e6600 ga-965-dq6 motherboard 2x1GB ADATA pc6400 ram 7950gt video card Antec p150 case and it failed to boot up the first time. The power LED would light up for 1 second and then go off. I disassembled everything and tested just the motherboard/cpu/ram, didn't work. I tested the power supply on a known good motherboard and it didn't work. Then I bought a new PSU and tried it, once again the power LED would light up for 1 second and then go off. Tried with/without RAM, video card, 12v CPU connector, nothing works. Never got any beeps. The CPU seems ok, no cracks or bent pins. I wore a static strap the whole time. So I am thinking that the old PSU is dead, and the motherboard too (possibly killed by the PSU). Anyone have any ideas? I am tearing my hair out... :badpc: |

| 547745 | 2007-05-06 12:15:00 | Oh, dear, so sad with such a potentially nice machine. And none of us will be super happy to tell you what to do in case we help you make it worse! But would you advise how you set up the test of the second known good mobo? In the case or how? Also, how experienced are you at this? Have you tested with all the bits out of the case? I would isolate the case from the equation in case (no pun intended) there is a short somewhere to the case. Let's hear back on the points above and see where we go from there. |

Also if you are using any low revving aftermarket fans they may not spin fast enough for mb default settings. Check the heatsink is attached properly also. If it looks like the psu hasn't worked right from the start, contact your supplier and tell them whats going on and see what they can do for you. They won't fix anything you've caused yourself but if any new parts are faulty they should be able to help. |

You may be best to take it to a professional, otherwise you could cause it damage if you haven't already, and it would make an expensive mistake. |

| 547748 | 2007-05-07 05:20:00 | I tried the new PSU on a known good motherboard today and it worked fine. So the old PSU is definitely faulty. Also the motherboard or CPU (or both) is faulty because it didn't work with the new PSU. Apparantly CPUs are very reliable so it is probably the motherboard. Before you ask yes I tried resetting the CMOS, with/without CPU fan and system fan, 0/1/2 sticks of RAM etc etc. No this isn't the first PC I have built. The first one I built still works great. Maybe I should have just got a Dell... :groan: |

| 547749 | 2007-05-08 08:15:00 | Maybe I should have just got a Dell... :groan: NEVER honestly, anyone capable of building there own (and all proper gamers) should know the many reasons of why not to buy a dell/hp/compaq/whatever.... then again if all you're running is office and firefox a dell is fine, and you wasted alot of money on graphics (oh wait, VISTA) |

| 547750 | 2007-05-08 08:40:00 | Make very sure that the motherboard is not shorted to the case, except where it should be. Most of the supports will be insulaters, but there's likely to be one or more which are brass, and intended to earth particular points. If you earth a supply point, this will stop it working. That should not destroy the power supply or the board, but ... | Graham L (2) | ||
