"I do not want to position Ubuntu and Linux as a cheap alternative to Windows," Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth told eWEEK.com." www.desktoplinux.com

Digg blogger says: "Installing WINE is a snap. If it's not included with the desktop, it can be downloaded and installed in under a minute flat through the Synaptic Package Manager."

My question: how effective is WINE? Do all or most Windows programs work with WINE?

547508 2007-05-06 00:37:00 Last time I tried Linux and attempted to install Wine it proved to be impossible. That was about a year or so ago, I presume things have improved drasticly on the Linux front since then.

And that quote from the Ubuntu founder is pure crap- he should be pleased if Linux becomes any sort of alternative to Windows.

547509 2007-05-06 02:56:00 Installing wine IS a snap on kubuntu/ubuntu. Its a case of tick the box and hit install. All dependencies will be downloaded and installed as required.
Wine will run quite a few simple windows apps, but big complicated apps ( and anything that requires directx ) often wont.
Photoshop "runs" under wine but is not too stable. If you want to take things further have a look at codeweavers CrossOver: www.codeweavers.com

547510 2007-05-06 03:02:00 That's a perfectly reasonable attitude for Dell to take. They can't be expected to provide support for something like Wine. So they don't install it. ;) What they do install is a Linux system which runs *nix applications. They will support that. Graham L (2)
547511 2007-05-06 03:27:00 Wine will run the few apps that a linux user might like to keep before becoming linux literate.
There is really no need to run any Windows apps at all when linux does it better in most cases.

547512 2007-05-06 05:36:00 Installing Wine for me was really easy (Mepis 6.5 32-smp) - just a matter of a few clicks in synaptic (software installation program). Runs really well. A bit hit and miss with the software that runs - but good (if they work) for the few programs you cannot do without. Eg - my wife loves Hoyle Card Games & Hoyle Board Games. As long as I got them working she'd switch to Linux as main system. Both worked!

Anyway - now been using Mepis for 3 months (before that had never tried any Linux system) - and we now no longer use XP except for the rare occasion when I'm stuck with something that won't work with Wine, or doesn't have a workable native (free!) Linux alternative. Even using Doom3 & Quake4 natively under Linux - so I'm happy.

I say good on Dell for giving customers a choice. Can understand their reluctance to install a lot of software though - learning curve is 'interesting' for ave Windows user. Google & forums your friend when learning! Switch so far has been worth it in the end for us.
