548420 2007-05-08 21:50:00 I recently downloaded Windows Installer 3.1 update, but the file was corrupt. On trying to install, the program aborted, but left the nag on screen. I deleted everything I could find in registry & on disk with the KB number in it, & dowloaded a new update - which took about 20 seconds ( 3.5mB on a dial up - I wish) This also must be corrupt or they think I have a good version. I went back a week to a good system, but the ^&^^^& program was downloaded again at the next update. Silly me I forgot to turn off Auto update. How do I get rid of the junk USoft have given me. brian-zl1thf (4031)
548421 2007-05-08 23:27:00 Whats wrong with the Windows Installer 3.1 update? Surely rather than avoid installing it, it would be better to work out how to get it installed correctly?

Try a manual download of it from the Microsoft.com website and install it yourself instead of through Auto-Updates.

USoft?

548422 2007-05-08 23:57:00 USoft?
possibly they mean microsoft with the u as the micro symbol (µ)

µsoft

as using a lower case u is (or was )acceptable practise when the µ symbol isn't available, i am sure Graham will have something to say on this

548423 2007-05-09 00:05:00 Have tried a manual download, but when I try to install it, the computer goes through the motions, then tells me the programme has not been installed, but the I have to restart the computer to finish. When I do, I get the nag sumbol to say I need to download Installer v 3.1 - back to the start. I agree about uSoft. slip of the tongue!! brian-zl1thf (4031)
548424 2007-05-09 01:57:00 I had a similar problem with another app recently. Try downloading "Windows Install Clean Up" from M$ (Google for it) - run Windows Install Clean Up, select the problem application (MS Windows Installer 3.1) and click <Remove>. But use with care - items selected and removed with this tool must be reinstalled.

This tool should delete any partially installed/uninstalled version and allow a reinstall... Worth a try?

548425 2007-05-09 22:25:00 Tried that one yesterday. Windows Installer is not on the list. Someone else with the same problem I think. see "Installshield wizard corrupt' posted later than mine. Today downloaded the Installer file & tried to install manually. Went OK so far then came up with an error screen " KB893803 v2 setup error : Access denied". Then the system reverses the installation proceedure & tells me the Installer was only partially installed & may not work. It leaves me with the nag screen on the taskbar that wants to install the file & I am back to the start again. Endless loop?!! brian-zl1thf (4031)

I had the same problem - I Repair-ed WinXP Pro using an intergrated SP2 CD, after which Windows Installer 3 . 1 wouldn't install, which means you can't get any updates .

Here's how I solved the problem:
Download the EXE installer for Windows Installer 3 . 1 v2 from here
. microsoft . com/downloads/details . aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56 . . . 38-b838" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com
You can try running it, but most probably will get an "Access denied" error and it will roll back the changes . If it installs fine, then you are set and don't need to do anything more, if not, look below .

Make sure Automatic Updates are turned off, or set them to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them . "
Also make sure WinXP's CD isn't in your CD/DVD drive .

Check in the Services app (services . msc) that Windows Installer service isn't running, stop it if needed .

Open the X:\Windows\system32\dllcache\ folder (where X: is your system drive) and delete these three files (if they exist):
msi . dll
msihnd . dll
msiexec . exe

After that, from this Symantec article
. symantec . com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo . nsf/docid/2001112111324 . . . ?Open&a" target="_blank">service1 . symantec . com
do this:
On the Windows desktop, click Start > Run .
In the Open line, type cmd and then click OK .
At the command prompt, type the following, depending on your version of Windows, and then press Enter after each line .

cd \windows\system32
ren msi . dll msi . old
ren msihnd . dll msihnd . old
ren msiexec . exe msiexec . old
exit

(Notice that after each rename you will get a prompt from Windows that system files have been replaced, and it asks for the WinXP CD in order to restore them . Do NOT put the WinXP CD into the drive, click Cancel, then choose Yes in the other dialog box that appears . )
Restart the computer .

Run the Windows Installer 3 . 1 EXE installer (downloaded in the beginning) .
Follow the prompts to complete the installation, it will install fine .
Restart the computer .

You might get dialog boxes with errors about msi . dll missing .
I got such a dialog box from my anti-virus software .
Start the Command prompt (cmd) again, and rename the three files back .
Go to Windows Update . It will say it needs to install Windows Installer 3 . 1, and will say the installation failed, but it will actually succeed .
Do not restart the computer, click the link to Windows Update Home on the left to go back to the main Windows Update screen with the "Express" & "Custom" buttons .
Click the Express button, it should show you all post-SP2 updates (around 40-50 MBs) . They should download quickly (if you are not on dial-up) .
After the updates install, restart your computer .

You can now change the Auto Updates setting to the one you like .
To check if Windows Installer has been properly updated, follow this link

Thanx

PS

I Did do the first 4 method here . microsoft . com/kb/555175/en-us" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com and now my outlook needs a repair rename thoses msi . dll files back and outlook will work again

The advice is
You must read carefully and go slow

Double and triple check the steps .

Seemed to work for a few people . . .
