548045 2007-05-07 14:15:00 Hi

I went onto Windows update to update the machine (new hard drive) and saw that automatic updates weren't turned on. So I turned them on and clicked to express update.

I saw the little shield in the taskbar downloading. This was a bit odd because I was doing it through the browser.

I updated 78/79 of the patches and the one that wasn't installed was the one the shield downloaded. So I restarted and started to install the one the shield had downloaded. Fail.

(Why would they allow mutliple update instances)

I tried repairing .Net in Add/Remove programs which didn't work.

I then used dotnetfx_cleanup_tool to clean things up and that didn't work.

I uninstalled the .Net framework and installed it again from a fresh download. Tried updating, didn't work.

Now when I go to update, it gives me the option to just install.

I was wondering if I could remove the corrupt updates, download them again and install them properly.

548046 2007-05-07 21:12:00 That does happen sometimes, once u go to the site the shield appears in the taskbar.

But, here, its not on automatic, it just tells me theres updates.

You should click on custom not expert and select what u want from the site.

That way u can tick what u want and untick what u dont want.

Yup, and that .Net is pretty fussy on what or how its installed.

It depends on what program you're using on what version is needed.

I had the same prob a few mths. I uninstalled V1.1 and some stupid program wanted 1.1 (which v2 doesnt include).

I couldn't re-install 1.1 (while 2 was installed). So, in the end I had to format the PC to get it back again.

And I think if u download v3 of .Net, I've been told it includes v2, but not 1.1 lol. So, you wont be able to install 1.1 if some something needs it.

So, u have to be careful, with what version of .Net u get / use, and what programs u get.

If they use / support a version of .Net.

548047 2007-05-07 21:50:00 ... so how can I fix it? music_man (5482)
548048 2007-05-07 21:59:00 Go to the Microsoft site (www.microsoft.com)

And do a search for whatever version of .Net and get it manually. BUT if it still wont work, you may have to format and start all over again.

548049 2007-05-07 22:01:00 No way am I reinstalling Windows AGAIN. That a framework can corrupt an entire operating system is stupid.

I have downloaded .Net but haven't used it. The question was about the updates not downloading, not whether it works or not.

548050 2007-05-07 22:23:00 Well find out whatever program/s you've got and check what version of .Net it uses

You dont need .Net updates, if u don't have nothing that uses it.

BUT, I know the ATI drivers install needs them. BUT I would get .Net 1.1 and 2.

Not just 1.1.

I dont think .Net corrupts anything. You (the user) just has to make sure you install them in the right order, for things to actually work properly.

Well did u try rebooting and then go back to the site or select the updates when the shield appears, to see if the updates worked then??

I usually go to the Windowsupdate site and click on the links for the updates.

(or check the RSS feeds for the updates) and get the updates directly. Since, I'm installing the updates on 2 computers. It saves me getting them on this, then the other PC separately.

548051 2007-05-07 22:45:00 I appreciate the help but I am not getting anywhere.

The question is: How can I delete corrupted Windows updates? This is relative to the .Net update not installing. I would like to redownload and install those updates fresh.

548052 2007-05-07 23:10:00 Well u could try some of the steps/options here (support.microsoft.com) Speedy Gonzales (78)
548053 2007-05-07 23:43:00 Thanks for the link! I followed a couple of steps, the one that seemed to work was clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder.

I went back onto Windows update and saw that I could download them again. So I started doing that. Only 1 out of 2 of them installed. I have no idea why the other didn't.

It is: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB917283)

548054 2007-05-08 00:00:00 Is .Net 2 installed? If it isnt that maybe why it failed.

And before installing any version of .Net, I would check and see (if u have any programs that need it), what version of .Net is required, so whatever program will install or work properly).
