548353 2007-05-25 12:50:00 The iBook went out of production a while back.I have to wonder why, considering that all Mac computers are supposed to be perfect. Greg (193)

548355 2007-05-26 15:18:00 i think Greg's point is mac fan are so keen to point out the flaws in other operating systems, but dismiss problems with their own.

funniest thing about xboxes (apart from being ****, another example of marketing a crappy product like the ipod, except apple did it right by overpricing) is that if you want to harm microsoft, they lose money on every unit sold :D

548356 2007-05-26 15:27:00 bah! sure they made a mistake, but refusing to acknowledge it despite global complaints! that really is bad. most companies do product recalls for that kind of thing.

making a mistake is human, but denying it despite mounting evidence is just sheer arrogance and money grubbing imo

I agree with your 2nd point about Apple often refusing to acknowledge flaws in their products. It is a fairly common thing for Apple although If enough people complain about a particular design flaw Apple usually does something about it. You could say that they carry a somewhat arrogant aloofness when it comes to cutting edge styles designs where they tend to be the first and only company pushing the boundaries of what is possible with hardware design which can lead to design or manufacturing flaws some acknowledged and some not. For better or worse it has always been the way that Steve operates and will always be the way that Steve operates while other companies finally catch on 3-4 years down the track when they see what successes Apple has had.

If it hadn't been for Apple setting the standard and other companies eventually following, PCs and other devices today would be looking a whole lot more boring than they already do and they would probably still be coming in the same Beige colour.
Why? If Beige sells well why change the colour. It is only when competitors see another better designed product selling well in different colours on higher profit margins despite the competition that they wonder what they can do to improve their own.

Yes, I can name of design failures in Apple's history from as far back as the Apple Lisa if my memory serves me correctly (overheating due to no fans or cooling from Steve's insistance which was also what got him booted out)

With regards to the OS, lets just say that I'd rather use OS X than XP any day.

PS. If the iPod was generally as crappy as you say it was then NO amount of marketing would have enabled it to sell more than 100 million units in that time frame considering that they were a number of pre existing music players already in the market when the first iPod was released and I think they were cheaper than the iPod until the iPod got it's production numbers up a bit.

If you look at the Zune on the other hand which had a HUGE marketing campaign to try and counter the iPod, and what happened to that? It tanked Why? Because despite all the "features" on the Zune, none of them worked and the DRM was too restrictive and annoying for the 3 users who bought one. The Zune is still trying to reach 1,000,000 units sold despite carrying more features. The head of the Zune campaign was fired not long after it was released because the whole thing had been such a failure.
In contrast, the iPod which was released in October 2001 had sold 125,000 units by December 31 2001 and it was originally released for Mac only. The PC version didn't come out till mid July 2002 and after that it just took off.

The iPod is currently the cheapest device of it's type in every price and size category (except for the smallest 256MB memory stick category)without having to be on specialled off to draw customers.

The G4 iBook with its old Motorola chip was EOL'd to make way for the newer faster MacBook range as part of Apple's continual product refesh cycle and swap to Intel chips.

LOL - the zune is a perfect example of a REALLY crappy product not selling due to marketing. proof that the amount of money spent doesn't guarantee quality and effect of advertising.

the ipod becoming a fashion statement, the best marketing possible, is what made it sell so well

oh, and the rest of your post simply proved my first point:p

as for pricing, see a "2GB 1.8" MP4 MOVIE PHOTO FM VOICE REC (www.trademe.co.nz)" with styling stolen from the ipod, vs "IPOD NANO (2nd gen) 2GB (www.trademe.co.nz)"; ipod gives less bang for significantly more buck

it's like buying a mercedes when you could have an equivalent hyundai. you're just buying the brand (except in the case the hyundai is more reliable and cheaper to fix too)

548360 2007-05-27 07:27:00 Marketing was only half of the Zune's problem, the fact that half of it's features didn't work, it is riddled with DRM, it doesn't always work the first time you plug it into your PC and it is NOT cross platform compatible. The Wifi only partially works IF your within about 9 metres of someone else who owns a Zune and the song that they "squirted" to you will only "survive" for 3 days before becoming unusable due to DRM restrictions which is not what i would call a great user experience. The Zune didn't work because it was badly planned and poorly done from the get go.

Except that I think I would prefer to own and drive a mercedes than a hyundai which incidently would be no more reliable than the mercedes although possbiley cheaper to fix. The Mercedes would have better performance and creature comforts than a Hyundai.

Incidently, the iPod does what it is designed to do, it plays music.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery. If you can't do a better job just copy the competition.

i know the zune was crap, i have no wish nor desire to defend a crappy product.

now you see, all major car manurfacturers have luxury model cars. you can pay hundreds of thousands for a german car or the japanese equivalent -ie equal to in comfort, gadgets and performance, (there are non-luxury mercs out there btw)- for less than half the price.

for the record mercedes are both one of the LEAST reliable car makers and MOST expensive to fix. hyundai aren't too bad on either front, if you don't believe me honda offer some top line cars too.

atleast a bmw is reasonably reliable, they went **** for a while but crawled back.

point being that you would pay the extra for the badge, you may not realise it, but you're buying a merc, not a car, just as people buy an ipod, not an mp3 player unless they actually have an objective look at the options before them, WHICH is what all this started about. mac fans buying into apple products because apple made them, poking fun at negatives in other companies but never acknowledging apple's faults, or blowing it off with some bs excuse. apple is a smart company, and know people will buy looks before functionality and will buy things they think will make them cool before they realise they're being ripped off.
