| 548140 | 2007-05-08 02:23:00 | SO YOU WANT TO TRY LINUX: Do not be afraid to give it a go,most popular distros are easy to install. Find a site that lists the systems in popularity and pick from the top ones. You will find Linux OS's will still give you access to windows folders but windows does not “see” linux folders. Try to clear your mind of things “windows”and be prepared to learn. Linux is very,very safe and does not have virus or spyware problems but antivirus is necessary so you will not pass on viruses that come in to your system by sending them out thru forwarded emails to windows people. After the install you will have email,a browser,sound & graphics ready to go with just a minimum of setting up. Open Office will do anything Ms Office will do and do it better in most cases. Most hardware will work straight off but some may require you to tweak things and add more apps as you progress. USB hardware can be a problem but later versions of OS's are getting round this. It is almost essential to join a forum where questions will be answered by other users and it is best to be in one set up for your choice of OS. Once you think you know everything then take care as this is when things can go very,very wrong. |

| 548141 | 2007-05-08 04:09:00 | Agree 100% Also LUGs ( linux user groups ) are a good place to ask for advice. There will be a LUG near you. Just Google NZ pages for "linux user group" and you will find heaps. Things you may have problems with: Late model photo printers ( especially Canon ip series ) Epson does have good Linux support tho. Winmodems - dont go there..... Broadband is much better for Linux anyway as most of your software is available by downloading from various repositories. |

| 548145 | 2007-05-08 19:54:00 | A good method to try out linux is live distro's (ie run from cd) put in your live distro cdrom, change boot order in bios to cdrom, floppy(if you have one), hard drive.Then boot the machine off the live linux cdrom. The same warning applies here even with a live distros, you can destroy your host os on the pc. Remember if you tell linux to do somthing and your command syntax is correct it does it no secound chances. Thats one reason people reccomend not using root as a everyday login but use su when you have to preform admin task on your system. |
