2007-05-11 07:17:00 | My g/f is interested in getting a printer combo scanner. For a home user, what brands are there, and does anyone have any experience with these (reliability and quality being the major 2 attributes, speed not so important). And preferably a few hundred dollars (not in the thousands)

2007-05-11 07:23:00 | I think you can get one at less than $100. ;) Have a look at a Warehouse Stationery shop. The one I was in this afternoon had a huge range of them. As always, check the running costs. Ink cartridges seem to have prices inversely proportional to their contents. | Graham L (2) | |
2007-05-11 07:31:00 | Yup, I'm using a Brother MFC-215C. Was bout $169, when I brought it @ DSE. I think its come down in price now. Its good enough for me, has a scanner/fax/printer/copier. You can plug an answerphone system into it. And altho it hasnt got a network connection, u can still network it either by ethernet or wirelessly once its connected to a USB port. And it can be updated with firmware which can be handy to fix bugs etc.

2007-05-11 07:48:00 | I know that there was a Brother brand MFC that was a Laser. Unfortunately it was also one of the dearest ones available on the market and was being (from what I can tell) discontinued. Last I saw it, Noel Leeming had them.

2007-05-11 09:04:00 | I have a Brother MFC and like most things you get what you pay for. It was cheep! I wish I had spent more and got the equivalent HP one even though it was double the price. | tutaenui (1724) | |
2007-05-11 11:26:00 | For home office use - Brother MFC7420. Laser printer, flat bed and sheet feed fax, scanner and copier. Excellent printing and has been very reliable for over 12 months. Got rid of a previous small Brother MFC ink jet as the colour cartridges dried out even when not used, and it refused to print/copy black when colour was dried out. | coldot (6847) | |
2007-05-11 13:12:00 | Please dont get a Brother. Worst printers ever. I agree totally with the poster a couple of posts above, I should have gotten the HP and it was the same price as the brother too. They just suck ink through their constant cleaning and the noise is horrendous. | beeswax34 (63) | |
2007-05-11 13:47:00 | Please PLEASE don't get a Brother. I can only echo the above. I made the mistake, now a barely used one is about to become expensive landfill. To rub salt into the wound the software that came with it refused to uninstall correctly ... I thought it was my imagination, but in the end used a digital microscope to compare the print quality from it (and another Brother model) compared to an older HP, the difference was startling. It was basically unsuited for any business use if you care about the presentation. Plus it drank ink in its cleaning cycles, so although the ink appeared attractive price-wise it was expensive over time. (MFC 3820CN model) If all you do is homework or letters to friends the print quality is acceptable if set on "Best" but it was then very slow. It was a good fax however. Now use an HP 7210 and the print quality is superb. Regretably I have to say that some years ago I made the same mistake with a Brother laser, after just a few thousand pages the drum needed replacement and the cost was within $20 of a new printer. That was given away.
