548861 2007-05-10 12:01:00 Greetings all.

The situation: I have an old computer that I'm using as a file/print server. it is connected to my wireless router. When I have company/relatives come I allow them to connect to my router with their laptop's so they can use my internet and printer. I don't really want them to have access to my files however.
Is there a way that I can restrict access to the files so that only my laptop can access it?
If it is possible, I would prefer a solution that is not password based.
The thing is, I don't know if it possible as the server is running XP home SP2 and everyone is on a workgroup.

PS: just as a thought, is it possible to have two simultaneous workgroups operating on the same network?

548863 2007-05-10 22:30:00 Thanks for that. I thought that might be the case.
Unfotunately I didn't have XP Pro when I installed windows onto the server, and I cant install it now as I have no monitor and keyboard available to do it. The only control I have is via VNC.

Havent tried it across the network but it works a treat on the local machine. Try it, it may just be what you need!

try tweakui for xp. If you have those "private files" on a separate partition you can hide it using tweak then when accessing it just type in the drive letter assignment (you will be the only one that knows it exists) and yes you can still map to it. But the partition will be invisible to all except those in the know
