549248 2007-05-13 03:12:00 No one has reassured Steve_L that an ip address differing in only the last digit is OK. All it takes is a difference.

Thanks Paul.
At the moment the laptop is online, but the desktop is off. Cannot fiddle right now as I am during work outside and only came in to change the internet radio station (listening via FM radio). As far as SP2, I'll file away Speedy's advice but I am not in any hurry to install SP2 now. Lets not go on about SP2, OK guys? Later today I will fire up the desktop and see if there still is an IP conflict.

549249 2007-05-13 09:12:00 Still not good. Turned on the desktop while the laptop was online and an error message popped up on the desktop: "IP Conflict With Another PC" (or similar words). Both 'puters went offline so I shut down the laptop and rebooted the desktop.

My hunch is when I changed the laptop's IP address, Zone Alarm or some other security program prevented the change from being permanent. I will change the IP once more with only the bare minimum items running. Will get back with the results...

549250 2007-05-13 10:00:00 I doubt ZA or a firewall would stop ip's from changing.

You could try this (support.microsoft.com)

Or this (www.windowsitpro.com)

I would say its a DHCP IP conflict, not a normal conflict (what u would see if u didnt have a router).

549251 2007-05-13 10:04:00 This is weird: changed the IP adr again using the "auto select" thing via Run > CMD > ipconfig > release > renew (shortened commands here) .

It successfully gave the laptop new IP numbers .
Rebooted . Checked and the old IP number is back - and only the last digit is different than the desktop's IP number - so I expected an IP Conflict error message or at least either pc to go offline but no . . . even when I rebooted the desktop all is OK with both pc's .

Dunno . Might be another combination of either pc being on first or whatever that causes the conflict .

If the problem persists (either pc going offline due to IP conflict), I will post a screenshot of the laptop LAN properties - cannot do it now as a friend has my pen drive and screenshot program not on laptop yet .

Stay tuned to see if gremlins persist . . .

549252 2007-05-13 10:05:00 Thanks Speedy. I'll study those links tomorrow. Shutting pc's down now.
Yes it could be a DHCP IP conflict.

549253 2007-05-13 10:09:00 You're not running something like Teatimer or similar that keeps track of what gets added to the registry are you?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
549254 2007-05-13 13:34:00 Reading through the posts on this thread I get the impression that there are some basic misconceptions so I would like to summarize how I think the system operates.
1.In a single PC broadband connection, the IP address, either dynamically supplied by the ISP or fixed by them is set into the one PC at the inboard side of the modem.
2.In a multi PC setup using a router (pronounced rooter as in "get you kicks on route 66" ) the IP address supplied by the ISP is set in the router, once again either manually or dynamically, on the outboard or modem side, and the IP addresses for the multiple PCs are provided by the router starting with it's own address of usually 192.168.1.1 and ranging up to a limit of 192.168.1.255.
All of these addresses form a private local area network on the inboard side of the router and have nothing to do with the ISP.
They must be unique but only in the final octet and the uniqueness is handled by the DHCP in the router. There should never be any need for manually setting IP adresses in any PC connected via a router.

I run a cable modem with a fixed IP address set into the Linksys router and all 4 of my PC/Laptops are set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically".

There is a setting in my router setup by which I can limit the number of DHCP users, it's currently set to 10, is it possible that you have a similar setting in your router set to 2?

I can also set the starting point for DHCP supplied IP addresses so in my setup I have the following:-
Router base address 192.168.1.1
PC 1 192.168.1.100
PC 2 192.168.1.101
PC 3 192.168.1.102
Laptop 1 192.168.1.103
This assumes that they are all connected and running.
If I do Run/ CMD /Ipconfig on each one, these are the IP addresses that show and they all show a common Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1 ie the router base address.

I hope this personal view helps you to solve your problem and I am happy to be corrected if I have got it wrong but sofar I have successfully installed many multi PC Networks both wired and wireless based on this understanding of the general functioning.

Sometimes Teatimer is running but not when I last did the ipconfig/renew.
Then I shut down all non essential processes.

Now to read jinja_thom's post...

(...trying to remember where I read how to check this.... on which web page it was on...) Its possible. I'll have to go through web pages that I have saved and also read Speedy's links - its new territory for me so it takes awhile to comprehend.

Speedy, I did disable Teatimer using msconfig, and it did disappear from the System Tray but I cannot recall if I checked Task Manager's running processes when I changed the IP adr. I say this because this morning the laptop does not connect online (but desktop OK) and Task Manager shows Teatimer running even though there is no icon in the SysTray. BTW I do not see Teatimer using services.msc
Strommer (42)
549257 2007-05-13 21:04:00 I dont think Teatimer has even been in Services .

Since you can turn it off and on thru Spybot .

Altho I havent enabled it myself . Have no need to .
