549077 2007-05-13 01:15:00 Funny you should ask that question . I have just gone through the thoroughly confusing shopping experience for exactly the same thing .

The range is mind-boggling, and you even get a situation where the same maker has two models at the SAME price apparently doing the same thing (Canon mp180 and mp450) :waughh:

You can get various for $99-$110, I spashed out and went for the $150 price point and purchased a Canon MP 450 for $149 . 90 from Bond and Bond (they had a free delivery thing going, it arrived on my doorstep next day) .

I am so far very happy with it, but of course my experience is limited to a few days . Quality in all functions seem very good, if a tad slow . It seems easy to set up and I like the structure of it with a proper flatbed for copying/scanning .

So far at least I'm glad I didn't splash out for a pricier model, it's hard to see what more I'd get from a higher spec machine .

549078 2007-05-13 02:16:00 How do you find print quality of the 1610? What about scanning? Any issues? Does the linux driver also pick up ink levels (I know the Epson drivers I use for my current printer don't). Any driver issues under linux?I find the print quality perfectly fine for my needs. If the printer was going to be used for more official documents etc, then a laser printer may suit better. The scanner works without problems using xsane and kooka. I just used the default packaged Fedora Core 6 HP drivers during OS installation and it "just worked" out of the box. "hp-toolbox" allows you to see ink levels and a range of other functions - see screenshots here (hplip.sourceforge.net).

Do the HP's have much of a paper storage facility and are they big ink users (question mainly refers to text docs with maybe the odd colour pic thrown in)The specifications state it takes 100 sheets of regular weight paper in the input tray and can hold about 50 sheets in the output tray. I have only changed the ink (black and colour) once in the printer in the two years I've had it. I am not a big printer, but done a bit with coloured photos.

The 1610 model comes with memory card slots for cameras and a spare USB port. It can be used as a stand-alone device without having to be hooked up to a computer when printing photos off camera memory cards. It also photocopies in B&W and colour which comes in handy.

549079 2007-05-13 02:20:00 I was talking to the Cannon rep at work and he was telling me how their new all in one printers can produce 2pl ink droplets (pl is picolitres a millionth of a litre so thats a millionth of a millionth of a litre) and they were the first company to do this.

Which means their all in one printers will deliver you more sharper text and enhanced images.

They also come with 5 ink cartridges so when one colour runs out you can just replace that one.

549080 2007-05-13 03:48:00 I am sitting at my desk staring at a Brother dcp-110c. If I hold my head at the right angle I can just make out the words scrolling on the tiny unilluminated display, Empty magenta.....Empty cyan...Empty Yellow....Replace ink.
No mention of the black cartridge I put in there less than a month ago. It won't print anything. A few weeks ago I tried to replace the ink, the ink replaced itself, all over the desk. I now have a purple phone and mouse-pad with red spots. My fingers have just returned to their former pink colour rather than the bright blue that they have been for weeks. We have an inorganic refuse collection coming up soon and I shall take great pleasure in taking to the pig of a printer with a brick.

549081 2007-05-27 10:48:00 Update: went out today and bought an HP Photosmart 3180 ($150 at Warehouse Stationary). Asked them if I wasn't happy with quality, could I return. They said yes, 2 week right of return providing it was in a saleable condition.
Bought it home and had a go at setting it up. Printer works locally (on Linux machine) as well as from Win2k machine via samba. Also have sane (scanning software) working (though haven't tried scanning anything yet). HP-toolbox is all go too :D. Its even looking for the photocard

Must say I am rather impressed by print quality and speed. Doesn't look too bad either.
First impressions (both for Linux compatibility and actual functionality) 9-10 out of 10. Lets hope it stays that way
