548993 2007-05-14 20:59:00 I am not coming out in IHugs defence here as I am also affected to a small ammount. However people have to realise they may be getting DOS attacks to their IP address. There modem/router may be filtering these out and of course their software would never see them but they do add up to data counted on there account.
This may not be the answer but it could be one of them. Only way to see is use the modem/routers data tracking ability

548994 2007-05-14 21:24:00 Yeah, fair enough comment, but in that case IHUG should be able to see an attack of that size against their network and either let us know, or block it if possible if its coming from a particular IP range.
Its their silence more than anything thats p***ing people off.
If IHUG admitted theres a problem, most people would probably go "oh, ok" and go on with their normal lives.

548995 2007-05-15 04:35:00 From Juha's blog...

The official reply from Ihug is posted.

We'd like to assure all ihug customers, and everyone that has commented on this issue, that ihug's data measurement methods are extremely accurate, as proven by a recent external audit conducted by Deloitte's.

We agree that it's vital that internet users are able to trust their internet providers when it's come to counting their data allowance - especially when the plan they've paid for is based on how much data they get, as opposed to speed, which is why ihug uses an external agency to
audit this process.

We recently upgraded our data counting system and as some customers experienced over and under-counting of data during the upgrade (mentioned in the comments earlier in this blog e.g. from ihug's newsgroup etc), we didn't rate limit these customers during that time i.e. we didn't slow their speeds down if they'd hit their data allowance. For customers on plans where they get charged for excess data, we waited until their data had been accurately processed before we billed them.

We would like to sincerely apologise for any confusion over this issue but please be assured that ihug is counting and billing for data correctly. The disclaimer on our online tracker within my account is simply to let customers know that there is a delay from when data is used to when it reaches our database and is then shown on the tracker. Due to the upgrade some data is taking longer than normal to be being processed at the moment, with some data from a few days ago still being processed - which is why the screenshots of data usage in this blog
changed slightly each time the data tracker was checked (and also the reason for some of the other issues talked about on
PressF1. We hope to have data processing as close to real time as possible again in the next few days - we'll keep you posted.

The main point is, we certainly haven't been saving money or defrauding unsuspecting users!

Cheers,
The team at ihug

P.S. Some people were talking about using their own data measurement program - ihug counts all traffic that is sent to and from a customer's connection so any conflicting counts you get may be due to the fact that the program used to monitor the traffic uses different measurement
criteria. We still recommend that you use our online data tracker (with your ihug bill as the final data record).

548996 2007-05-16 11:06:00 Well, I'd like to add my experience with this issue .

First, I've had my dsl account with ihug for 12 months - with no changes to anything during that period . Looking back at usage meters during that period shows a typical monthly usage of around 300-400 MB . I know it's not much, but we just like the convenience of dsl without downloading heaps of stuff . There have been times when I've downloaded large patches or similar which has shown up as a bigger usage for that month, but it's been predictable .

So, I think I'm a good test case, and I'm not going to try to install any logger to try to prove something I'm not guilty of . Cause in the first two weeks of this month I've racked up 1 . 5GB of data which is just impossible . Some days there isn't even a computer turned on and still the data is recorded .

I contacted ihug today after receiving notice of usage excess - over 400MB in one day, which is absolutely impossible for us - only to be told they've got some techies looking into it . What am I going to do? If I get charged for the excess usage I'm parting with ihug . They have really lowered their reputation recently . They lost my web site a while back due to some Turkish hacker infiltrating their 'security' and then having no backup, just some pointer to a page explaining how to upload my own web site from any copy I might happen to find somewhere . I spent a day or so learning heaps of stuff and finally got something up and running, but ihug have dropped the ball again . I'm not happy Bob, not happy .

Maybe orcon next?

548999 2007-05-17 11:32:00 Apparently i have used 900mb today, since 12pm,find that pretty hard to believe. Prescott (11)
