549239 2007-05-12 21:56:00 Turn off ZA, delete the bridge, set manual IPs on all PCs including your ISP DNSs, all PCs with same subnet mask, gateway & workgroup, see if that helps

Well, I am not thrilled with turning off ZA or any firewall for an extended time.

If the Network Bridge is deleted and problems arise, can it be easily be restored?

How do I "set manual IP's"?

Instructions found by googling say to change the IP address (the last 3 or 4 digits of the octet, I think). The thing is that we have two laptops - my wife's Toshiba always has been able to connect online but the Compaq is the one with problems. Before I "set manual IPs on all PCs" I want to see if the Compaq laptop can be configured, i.e., I do not want to mess with my desktop and the Toshiba if the Compaq just needs adjustment.

Nix on that idea. SP2 is not on any PC and I have no intention of doing so. There have been enough posts on this topic so I will not elaborate...

549241 2007-05-13 00:01:00 People have only been affected by SP2, because they were stupid enough (to get spyware).

And didnt bother to check/scan for spyware, BEFORE SP2 was installed.

Thats one of the reasons (well maybe the only reason) why SP2 reboots continuously, after u install it.

And well most of the updates now, require it if u want to update XP.

Too bad, if u get hit by something else, for not installing it.

Or the only other way to fix this is to slipstream SP2 on the XP cd, next time you format.

FWIW SP2 is NOT the be-all-end-all . People who go round saying that you MUST install SP2 or you MUST install anti-spyware etc etc so you don't get this virus or that virus or whatever spyware etc are just spreading the sheer paranoia that is so prevalent in the Windows world . These are RECOMMENDATIONS, not MUST-DO's
My laptop still runs XP SP1 . My Windows desktop (spare machine) runs Win 2K-SP4 with NO UPDATES and ONLY an AV [default with no updates] which spends all day on mirc . Both have yet to go down due to some virus or hack attack or whatever . Neither are using extraordinary amounts of my bandwidth . Am I lucky? I don't think so . I just haven't fallen for the same paranoia

549243 2007-05-13 00:35:00 Whatever dude, I was just saying that the more recent updates so they say require SP2 .

I didnt say YOU HAD TO get it .

I wouldnt care if u got it or not .

This is why I say you have gotten rather cynical lately

Maybe Speedy's cynical view has something to do with how often he points PF1 forum posters in the direction of his HJT file to analyise and cure their PC infections and ailments.
Just a thought.

To prevent is better than to cure.

Well, no actually I didnt care . Whats the point in staying with SP1, when most updates need SP2 . Which obviously wont work with SP1 .

Thats my point .

Its not a matter of me caring or not .

Its a matter of whether whoever wants to keep up to date .

And thats the end of this for this topic, it has nothing to do with what the main prob was .
