2007-05-12 00:44:00 | I am having trouble getting a WinXP laptop online . I have a 4 port Dynalink router and it successfully connects both my desktop and my wife's laptop to the internet, at the same time or separately . But with another (older) WinXP laptop it does not always get online when my desktop is also connected . FWIW, I have never had all three connected to the router - its only the desktop with one of the two laptops . Once there was this error message when booting up the laptop: "There is an IP address conflick with another system on the network . " So I googled and found two solutions: 1 . You should make sure all the Laptops and PC's are set to "use DHCP" or automatically acquire an IP address . Sometimes when you put the CD in for the router it adds a static IP of 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 and it stays there . ALL you need is automatic configure and let the dhcp in the router dish out IP addresses . IT doesnt give out duplicates . Thats where you need to start looking . Question: How do I go about setting the laptop to "use DHCP" or automatically acquire an IP address ? 2 . Go to each computer and find out the IP address . Run / Winipcfg Or Run / CMD / ipconfig Depending on your OS . Your looking for the IP addresses, they should all be different, but you will find that yours and one other have the same . (Ex 192 . 168 . 0 . 100 or 192 . 168 . 1 . 101, or 192 . 168 . 0 . XXX, XXX = 2-254) Enter network properties / TCP/IP and adjust the last octet to any thing different (2-254), but make sure it does not match any other system . The best bet, is to enable DHCP with in your Cable Router, and then go to each PC, and adjust for DHCP . This error is stating that your IP is the same as another IP on your little 4 PC LAN . Question: I checked the IP addresses and found only the last digit to be different - the first 7 numbers are identical . If I need to change the octet on the laptop, what numbers can use, e . g . in the suggestion they give 192 . 168 . 0 . 100 , so can I use this or will it bugger up the connection with my ISP? Shouldnt matter what u change/d the networked PC's to, just as long as theyre not the same (havent got the same ip) as one of the other ip address.

All you have to change is whats under Local Area Network. |

2007-05-12 03:43:00 | IP addresses for PCs connected via a router are allocated by the router so all the PCs must be set to "obtain ip address automatically. Read support.microsoft.com to find out how to force a pc to obtain a new IP address if the current one conflicts with another. HTH

2007-05-12 07:04:00 | Speedy and jinja_thom, thanks for the assistance. I have managed to change the IP address but I had to do it through Network Bridge since the LAN showed no TCP/IP properties which is strange because I read 3 web pages including jinja_thom's MS link and it should have been under the LAN. Anyhow, it seems to be working OK - I pulled the desktop pc plug on the back of the router and the laptop stayed online. Next I will power off this desktop and restart the laptop to see if it goes online. If I do not get back here it means all is well. One advantage of running the laptop for internet radio broadcasting is that I don't have to hear the loud ps hum of the desktop. When I hear that damn hum it seems that a lot of power is being consumed - maybe not so much more than the laptop but at least it feels that way.

2007-05-12 11:42:00 | Why are you using a network bridge? Do you have multiple network adapters? Its a mystery. I have no idea why it is there - I did not add it. The laptop is 4 or 5 years old and with low end specs, so it is nothing special.

2007-05-12 21:21:00 | Still having problems, in two areas. 1. Zone Alarm (free edition): When Firewall is changed from High to Medium, the laptop connects online. My desktop ZA Security Suite is set at High, which is recommended. I have checked Program Control several times and nothing there indicates that Firefox or anything else is being blocked (red X's). I have other issues with ZA and will start a separate thread on this topic. Perhaps I should reinstall ZA or dump it and use Comodo? 2. Although I changed the IP address (automatically configure) on the laptop yesterday, it has now changed back to an address that is different to my desktop by only the last digit. Could it be the Network Bridge issue (see above posts)? I did try disabling Network Bridge but LAN still did not show the TCP/IP settings. ..... Ideas? Thanks. .......... [edit] It is strange - yesterday the laptop did connect online and ZA's setting was unchanged. I guess the changed IP address was still effective but after booting this morning the IP adr only has the last digit changed and ZA - still in the High Firewall setting - stopped internet activity.
