2007-05-11 03:54:00 | Can a computer have two versions of USB ports? (Possibly a dumb question!). I believe that the front two USB ports on my HP Pavillion 1760a are USB 2.0 and I suspect that the four ports at the back are only USB 1.1. When I check my Device Manager Settings I see the following: Generic USB Hub Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2658 Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 2659 Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265A Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal Host Controller - 265B Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB Enhanced Universal Host Controller - 265C USB Composite Device USB Composite Device USB Mass Storage Device USB Root Hub USB Root Hub USB Root Hub USB Root Hub Cheers

Under XP you get a message along the lines of "this device can operate faster" when you plug a USB2 device into a USB1 / 1.1 port. Also you could try copying a file to and from the pc on different ports to confirm there's no speed difference. Looks to me like you have 8 USB 2 ports (usually 2 per controller) 2 on front, 4 at the back and possibly another 2 available on the motherboard. |

2007-05-11 04:27:00 | I have tried plugging a USB 2.0 web camera into both the front and back ports. When it was plugged into the back I got a message similar to that which you described, Dugimodo. Not so when I used the front port. That was what made me suspicious in the first place. | lloydallan (11827) | |

2007-05-11 05:31:00 | No I have made no changes to the PC - it is nearly 3 years old. I note that just below one of the USB ports at the front it states USB 2.0 - nothing on the back ports. | lloydallan (11827) | |
2007-05-11 07:12:00 | It could be that HP assumed that you would use two USB ports for a keyboard and a mouse, so they could save a small amount of money on those ports. Keyboards and mouses don't need USB2, unless you're a very fast typist. But the mix is wrong for that theory: 2 fast, four slow. Of course it could have been the well known, and popular, technical process known as the "cockup". I t's nice that the two front ports are fast so you can plug in portable devices without grovelling around at the back, though I would still prefer to plug a keyboard and mouse into sockets on the front of the box. :(

2007-05-11 13:23:00 | you could always google the specs for your pc - HP keep info on their website for quite a long time | dugimodo (138) | |
