548892 2007-05-10 18:59:00 I am getting a new motherboard.
I want ASUS 775 with Intel Chipset.
I have no need for all the fancy addons. Just plenty of USB connectors and ia hole to plug in my router.Plus provision for two vid cards.
Ascent have several listed that seem to fit all at different prices. Which one is the best?

Ram. DDR2 400 500 or 800????

The cpu will be a dual core extreme.

Any serious advice will be very welcome.:help:

548894 2007-05-10 19:47:00 Ah going back to dual core huh. After rubbishing them.
But Intel this time.

Well I'd choose one of:
www.ascent.co.nz

www.ascent.co.nz

www.ascent.co.nz

Depending on how much you want to spend.

548895 2007-05-11 05:33:00 I will mostly stay out of this but will watch the thread with interest.

Dual core then Single core then Quad core then off to another dual?

548896 2007-05-11 05:46:00 Don't go with DDR, make sure its DDR2.

And the faster the better really, but it depends on what you want to do with it. I would recommend 800mhz RAM, but at least get a mobo that will support it in case you want to upgrade later.

A mobo that will run RAM at 800mhz will also run 667mhz, and probably 533mhz too, but sometimes that can depend on the brand of mobo

Good Luck.

548897 2007-05-11 06:24:00 Sorry, but I can't help either Jack .

I just wanted to say how much I admire a man who knows how to restock his garage in style!

Cheers

548898 2007-05-11 06:32:00 He'll need to extend the garage soon. Some people have built houses using bottles instead of bricks; perhaps computer cases would be usable (until they rusted out). Graham L (2)

Any Intel chipset based motherboard will only support Crossfire not SLI, plus they have a crappy setup electrically for the slots. They might be dual 16x slots but if its 965 chipset ones 4x and the 16x, the 4x slot seriously hurts performance. The more expensive 975 chipset allows for two 8x slots which is a slightly better configuration.

You can run SLI on Intel boards but it requires hacked drivers and its probably not the best solution for you Jack ;) So you'll either need to switch your alliances to ATI or ditch the Intel chipset.

Any particular reason you're only considering Asus? Why you buying an Extreme chip? They're so expensive and offer very little performance increase for the money spent.
