548850 2007-05-10 14:51:00 My XP Home desktop system has started shutting down after being in standby for about an hour, which is contrary to my settings.:annoyed:

The Power Managment settings are,_ Standby after 30 minutes and Hibernate after 2 hours.

I have NOT added any new software or hardware. Device Manager shows no conflicts. I have run Ad-aware, CCleaner,Spybot S&D and Norton Antivirus 2 or 3 times without detecting anything since this started.

What could be responsable? How can I fix it?

548851 2007-05-10 15:02:00 I forgot to mention that I have run System File Checker twice as well! Vince Vince (406)
548852 2007-05-10 20:44:00 Check if any power settings in your BIOS are overriding your XP settings. snoopy (74)
548853 2007-05-13 05:29:00 Yes, I thought of that; but nobody has been into the BIOS for at least a year. The problem is only a couple of weeks old.

I will check it out next time I restart.

548854 2007-05-19 15:46:00 There is nothing in the BIOS that could over ride the Windows power settings . :annoyed:

Help would be appreciated because this is more of a problem for me than you might expect . :help:

548855 2007-05-19 17:42:00 I'd try to remove the settings that you want, reboot and then reset them where you want them again and reboot a second time.

SOMETIMES the settings get corrupted and you think they are set correctly..but they aint!

What're you using the puter for if you need that standby running so accurately and correctly..just nosy I guess...but if it's to wake you at a nuclear generating station job or tell you when to change the batteries in your pacemaker...I'd get another form of reminder.

The thing is that it is in my nature to have dozens of programs and browser tabs open at one time, and to switch between them frequently .

When the computer comes out of Hibernation, it starts all of these in about 15 seconds!

When restarting however it takes more like 15 minutes for me to open the programs and files in the order that I want them to appear in the task bar .

548857 2007-05-20 08:12:00 Vince, Windows desktop hardware does not always support Standby and Hibernate, the modes were apparently primarily designed for laptop hardware.

In the last few (actually now 17 desktop PC's) it has been reliable in only 3, yet all of the last 4 laptops had no problems.

The reality is that a Windows update could have "broken" the reliability, but the root cause will be a driver for one of the devices that is less than optimum, the results are only now seen.

I have seen a major PC manufacturer support tech comment re the above, that the mode is only (almost) 100% supported in laptop hardware and drivers, which mirrors my experience. When it works, it works. When it doesn't, it's a PITA. But the causes may be elusive....

548858 2007-05-21 14:37:00 Thanks Godfather,_:)

We can always count on your wisdom and experience to find a clear line of sight through the morass of Windows.

Your post leaves me with a sense that I know where I stand. Even if the issue is not fixed I no longer feel "Like a stranger in a strange land".:waughh:
