548823 2007-05-10 10:10:00 USB Stick is FAT, PC is NTFS. Does this make any difference? If the pen drive be changed to NTFS, how is it done? Strommer (42)
548824 2007-05-10 10:11:00 It's the norm. Just keep it FAT, it's more versatile that way. sal (67)
548825 2007-05-10 10:16:00 Depends what you're trying to do.

Do u want to boot from the usb stick to access the NTFS partition?

Or just wondering if the stick will work if u plug it in, while you're in XP?

Which will work.

Altho XP with some sticks dont give you the NTFS option.

You would format it, the same way you would format a floppy.

Altho some USB flash drives do come with their own software. So you can format it.

548826 2007-05-10 10:35:00 Sorry I didn't elaborate.

NTFS restricts your USB sticks read/write usage to WinNT+ (Win2K, XP and Vista included) systems which, if you only use computers that fit this description, then NTFS is OK. If you want to use it freely on older systems or Mac/Linux boxes, then just stay with FAT32.

But there are writeups on the MS site, so u can access FAT or NTFS partitions,if this is what u mean Steve.

548828 2007-05-10 19:48:00 Sal and Speedy, thanks for the info. Like most people I use the pen drive to transfer data from one xp pc to the next, not mac linux or 98-me. Although having said that, there is an old 98 pc that I must get data off as the owner finally got an xp pc.

I'll reveal the reason for posting this thread: I was wondering if FAT - NTFS made any difference in the rate of transfer of data. I have a new 1 Gb pen drive from PB Tech, only $16 with a lifetime guarantee and its rated 'super high speed'. See it here (www.pbtech.co.nz).
Well I dunno if it is really high speed. I guess I'll have to get a stopwatch and compare it to my old Rundisk 256 pen drive. When transferring a big chunk of photos it did not seem all that fast but other times it seems OK. If whoever is reading this, try copying around 500 mb of photos and transfer it to and from your pen drive while timing it, then I can compare.

Anyway it seems the best thing for me to do is leave it as FAT.

548829 2007-05-10 20:32:00 I would try, if I had 500 mb of photos lol.

I've only got 23mbs of photos.

I would say, it'll depend on whether the system supports USB 2 more than FAT vs NTFS on the speed.

And Windows 98 doesnt support USB 2. I think 98 SE + does tho.

So, it's most probably transferring at 1.1 speed which would explain the difference in the speed.

For $19 I wouldn't expect to get the fastest available...............

548831 2007-05-10 21:05:00 I have usb 2 on my home desktop, laptop and work pc, but an old laptop may have usb 1 - lets see... how can this be checked - My Computer > Properties, or how? Anyway, I do not use the old laptop very much at all - it is WinXP and I dusted it off last week to use for internet radio transmissions as keeping the desktop on for hours probably would take a lot more juice. 548832 2007-05-10 21:17:00 Look in device manager under the USB controller entry.

If it doesnt have any entries saying enhanced host controller, it doesnt support USB 2

Altho if you're using 98 it may or may not work anyway. Unless its got drivers.
