549412 2007-05-13 02:32:00 I need to know where to connect the 4 pin connector from the CD ROM onto the MS 6156 v1.0 BX7 motherboard. There are 3 possible slots, a green one, a yellow one and a black one all next to each other. Which is the one and how do I know which way round to connect the pins? bpt2 (6653)
549413 2007-05-13 02:39:00 Do you mean the audio connector??

Thats the only 4 pin connector for a cdrom.

It doesnt have to have it, you'll still hear sound.

Or do you mean the power connector??

That'll only go one way and gets connected to a spare molex / connection from the power supply.

Or do you mean the IDE cable??? There's a stripe on it, which connects to pin 1 on the CD (which will say 1), and to IDE 2 or IDE secondary on the mobo.

Which will also have a 1 at one end of it.

549415 2007-05-13 03:11:00 If there are a number of sockets, have a careful look at the connectors. There have been a number of different, incompatible, connectors used for the analogue audio output.

The tiny ones will fit only one way in the housing on the motherboard. The bigger sort will go either way, and switch L & R channels depending on the orientation. If you can tell the difference you will notice, otherwise it won't worry you. ;) If the three different coloured connectors are all the same sort, try them in turn until it works. But your computer will probably use the digital data output, anyway, so it might work without any. :D

But as stated earlier you don't really need the audio cable anymore if you are running Windows 2000, XP or Vista.
These operating systems can read audio CDs as digital data and so it will use the IDE cable and then it will be converted to analog by the soundcard.
If you are still using Win98 then you more than likely will need the audio cable if you want to listen to audio CDs.

549418 2007-05-13 08:46:00 Thanks for that. I'm running Ubuntu, so I'll see how that works. bpt2 (6653)
