549349 2007-05-12 23:47:00 Got a machine here with a trashed C: drive. Swapped in a spare disk of mine to test the OEM XP setup disk that I THINK is the correct disk for this machine. Displays the 'examining hardware' message for a few seconds then reboots. Does it on another machine as well. Tried my own XP disk and it started up normally.

The CD has marks on it but explorer has no problems diving into all directories.

Any ideas as to where I might go from here as obviously I would like to get this XP re-installed to a new disk?

Have you tried to use your own XP CD but using the OEM CD Key from the sticker?

549351 2007-05-13 00:19:00 Good suggestion, thanks, but I have solved the problem . Without much hope, I must admit, I got a soft cloth with alcohol on it and wiped the CD quite hard in a radial pattern . To my surprise, what looked like scuff marks, came off! Could have been glue as the packet shows some glue where it was stuck down . Anyway, XP is now installing . I hope it is the right one as the owner has two machines and he can only find one XP CD . This test install is to see if the key on the crook machine fits this install .

Cheers .

If both machines are XP home or both are XP pro, it won't matter what disk you use .
