| 549765 | 2007-05-14 18:46:00 | Hi All . Do all of the Vista OS's have this? Is anybody actually using it? If so, how does it compare with earlier Speech Recognitions, such as on MS Office Prof 2003 ? Yes I know there are Programs out there, such as Dragon Speaking Naturally, & others . PJ Since Vista is a US type system, do you suppose it cannot work with that NZ brogue? We had a guy come through our town here in San Jacinto last year from NZ . I could pick up about every 10th word or so . We put up a bronze plaque about his visit . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "On this site, July 3rd, 2006, A stranger arrived speaking a foreign tongue . We wish him Godspeed in his quest to be understood" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :xmouth: |

Only two fingers at that. So I looked at re-visiting Speech to Text. I did try the MS Office 2003 version but was not very successful, & gave it away. I will probably have to try a bit harder. PJ Maybe you need something like Mavis Beacon typing so that you can touch type at 20+ words per minute without looking at the keyboard. I got the program a few years ago and had quite good success with it. I think that would be faster and more use that MS crappy Speech Recognition, which from what I have seen is actually more difficult to use that you would expect (and therefore slower). |

| 549768 | 2007-05-14 21:03:00 | PJ, I am a two finger typist as well, with the same "brain to finger miscommunication" as you! However until I see large corporate users adopting speech recognition en masse I will not bother trying it. I am in corporate offices many times and still see the typists or the execs using keyboards exclusively. I have tried Dragon, Office XP but the error rate put it behind my present "hunt and peck" ability in terms of speed. The Speech Recognition is part of Vista, it's not a transferrable component. As for the non-understandability of the man referred to in Joe's post, he would be Australian, without a doubt... |

| 549769 | 2007-05-15 06:11:00 | The use of speech recognition has been featured in a Dilbert cartoon . Man form the next cubicle steps up behind the user and says loudly and clearly: "DELETE FILE" . We;'ll hear of godfather visiting a large corporate office with a megaphone . "FORMAT DISK" . |

| 549770 | 2007-05-15 06:23:00 | I actually enjoyed going through the Vista Speech Recognition wizard. It was good learning all the commands and features while training it. I played around with it for an hour or so and it wasn't half bad for navigating around the OS. For dictation it was pretty crummy though but I think half the problem was my lack of clear enunciation. That said, I pulled it from my personal Vista install image with vLite (http://vlite.net/) and knocked off a GB of bloat ;P. |

I went from being a 2 fingered typist to a 25words per minute typist with about 80% accuracy over about 2 months which is not bad considering that a lot of what I did was more layout and image related than text and typing- except for emails. |

| 549772 | 2007-05-15 06:41:00 | I went from being a 2 fingered typist to a 25words per minute typist with about 80% accuracy ...80%? Oh dear. "Only" 1 letter in 5 wrong? Perhaps you should tell your thumbs not to bother playing. Or is it the original 2 fingers not behaving? | Graham L (2) | ||
| 549773 | 2007-05-15 07:13:00 | 80%? Oh dear. "Only" 1 letter in 5 wrong? Perhaps you should tell your thumbs not to bother playing. Or is it the original 2 fingers not behaving? 80% accuracy for five fingered typing while looking at the screen @ 25wpm (from less than 5) is not too bad considering that my day job didn't involve being an office admin or data entry person where the requirement is more like 60wpm with 100% accuracy every time. |
