550328 2007-05-16 10:51:00 Does anybody know if there is something like a touchscreen monitor for everyday desktop use? As in, getting rid of the mouse?

How much for a 17 inch touchscreen monitor, if there is such thing?

550329 2007-05-16 11:00:00 Apart from the cash register type screens that you see in MacDonalds and in restaurants I don't think they exist although I think MS is working on prototypes in their labs. The only problem with the current version of "touch screens" is the very quick build up of grubby finger smudges all over the screen after general use. I believe that the iPhone which is due out in the states in the next few weeks has a proximity sensor embeded in the screen so that you don't actually need to "touch" the screen, you just run you finger within .5cm of the screen to navigate the menu or select a button on screen. I gather that the concept is making it's way towards laptops sometime next year. winmacguy (3367)

550331 2007-05-16 11:10:00 Give it a year or so and they will probably be more affordable with the next step being the proximity sensor screen where you don't actually touch it you just run your fingers past very close. winmacguy (3367)
550332 2007-05-16 16:38:00 Whattever happened to the light pens that we usta use on the old bank screens and such . Surely some enterprising person could create a USB2 stylus . . right?

You had a pen or stylus that you touched to the screen to indicate a choice or option for whatever transaction you made .

I think a resurrection of them would be a great idea to navigate the menus faster and without that greasy peanut butter-and-jelly (NZ= kangaroo sweetbread and Zespri Green kiwi amalgam sandwiches) screen build up forming .

It's quite easy for the raster to know where it is when an optical device sees a signal . . it would just match the received signal to the sent signal in an overlay parity test and figger where the stylus is at any given moment . . . pretty fast, too!

550334 2007-05-16 21:30:00 I know Dell makes them as I use them myself. Where to get them at at what cost, I have no idea. lotse (11963)
