550020 2007-05-15 10:43:00 I've installed a few different distributions on hda to decide which i like best. In the end, i decided that i like Etch best, and that's installed on hda1.

The problem is that grub goes to hda8, where i have Suse10.2 installed, and uses the configuration found there to boot the system. I'd like to get it so grub uses the configuration, and menu.lst found on hda1 so that i can reformat and reuse hda8 and yet still be able to boot.

How does one tell grub to look for the menu.lst on hda1?

550021 2007-05-15 20:21:00 What HDD/partition is GRUB installed on?

Have you tried editing GRUB.conf to what you want?

550022 2007-05-15 20:57:00 As far as i know GRUB is installed to the MBR, and then loads to "stage 1.5" by using the configurations (menu.lst) that is in HDa8, the suse install, that being the last distro i installed.

And there lies the problem.. Ihave no idea how to talk GRUB, installed to MBR, into using hada1 as the sourse for it's configuration of the finer points of what to boot up.

If i remove the content of HDa8, i'm stuffed.

550023 2007-05-15 21:20:00 I am guessing reinstalling GRUB under Etch is not an option?

On my WebBox, GRUB is under /boot/grub. (Etch) and grub.conf (AKA menu.lst as I have just found out!)

Have you removed the option to boot to hda8?

I am not sure how to fix it without a reinstall, what about 'default grub root device' setting?

550024 2007-05-16 00:28:00 Assuming that /boot is on the same partition as /, and that partition is hda1:
Boot into etch, then run the following:

debs:~# grub
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
That should be all you need, assuming you are running that from within etch.

:D

Not only did that work a treat.. BUT i now note that POS is booting noticably faster
Yay!

550026 2007-05-16 03:48:00 I think an alternative to the above that should also work is boot your Etch distribution and go out to a root prompt and type:

grub-install /dev/hda

550027 2007-05-16 07:41:00 johnd: That is an alternative, but it doesn't always work. The above method is generally more reliable. Erayd (23)
