| 550647 | 2007-05-17 07:40:00 | From where I sit, I know that Zone Alarm & AVG don't like to be in the same computer....do you need them both? To what I have seen / read I haven’t seen anything that says AVG & Zone Alarm don’t like either other, I am using AVG & Zone Alarm on my laptop as they work happily together, although I am using ZA 6.1. I also dumped AdAware as Firefox seems to have that venue all closed up anyway. Yes, but it does not stop Programs etc… From installing spy ware ads etc… 512 RAM is kinda cutting it close with ZA running with AVG. It really depends on what Bodes uses the computer for as I would of thought it would not made a lot of difference on how much ram you have on how well ZA & AVG works. Sorry Bodes for taken your thread off topic & Good luck getting your computer fixed :) |

| 550648 | 2007-05-17 08:26:00 | My sis is also using both AVG and Zone alarm on her laptop, as am I and my daughters on our desktops. We don't find a problem with it. | supergran (108) | ||
| 550649 | 2007-05-18 08:17:00 | Bodes, The symptoms you described in the opening post could also describe the earlier post from Greven entitled "svchost takes all of cpu ....." I've seen several cases of this which fit what you describe. Here's a way to check. As soon as the desktop is established and stable following a reload of windows, display Task Manager by using Ctrl/Alt/Delete and drag the bottom of the window down to show as many processes as possible to avoid having to sroll up or down. Make sure you have auto update set and are online then wait for 3 or 4 minutes for windows to it's first check for updates being available. If you have this problem, one of the many instances of svchost will begin to increase it's CPU usage untill it is varying about 98 to 100% at which time almost nothing else will respond. In some cases I have managed to turn off autoupdate and svchost goes down to 0 cpu so keep the autoupdate window open on screen as well as Task Monitor and try it. If you havent cured your reported problem yet give it a try. |

| 550650 | 2007-05-18 15:33:00 | There doesn't seem to be a set of rules as to what does or does not work well in every case..and YES...it all depends on a lot of other peripheral programs and such...like updates running at the same time you think you should have all your resources ready and at your command. I don't like ZA for it's bloat..but my system is not typical.. If I had to wait to secure all my drives with ZA and scan them all..I'd be here most of the day waiting for it to get done so I can use the keyboard for more than a napkin when I am eating at my desk. Seriously...I don't like bloatware..and ZA is right on top of my list..right behind McAfee, Norton and Symantec. I also avoid AOL and all it's permutations like the plague..and of course, I don't use IE for anything more than Windows updates and stuff Mr. Bill won't let happen on Firefox. I don't, however find that XP's firewall is all that bad. Staying off P2P's, torrents and warez sites will cover most any occurrences of needing something to watch your outgoing ports. Every time you go to one of those sites, a puppy or a kitty dies....just think of it that way. |

If u get the WGAplugininstall.exe file, and IEtab for firefox, this will fix the above. It'll let u use Windowsupdate and get/download updates from the MS downloads site. Then you wont have to use IE. |

I don't have ZoneAlarm but do have AVG. I wonder if you have found a solution? |

| 550653 | 2007-05-24 21:15:00 | This is my system ACER laptop with AMD Sempron 2800 + 512mb RAM. I am running XP and use Zone Alarm, AVG, Spybot + Ad Aware. Everything is up to date and I have virtually nothing on the computer (any files I have put on are <1gb). My problem is I start the computer up; can open up a programme (doesnt matter what) and then when I go to close the open programme it wont close (or open another whilst the first is still open) and the whole system locks up. You cant do anything and have no option but to power off. You can click on other programmes but they will not open and you cant click on the start to shut the system down It does sound like a virus of some sort; I have run all the checks and nothing. Has anyone come across this? Or have any suggestions? Hey something else i would check would be your hard drive, a failing HDD can cause all sorts of interesting issues. Just check on the brand of HDD and download a diagnostic for it. I don't run ZA and AVG on the same PC myself, but have seen them running together with no worries. So that shouldn't be causing an issue. |
