550114 2007-05-16 05:18:00 What model is your Seagate?

What about transfering, can you hear it then?

550115 2007-05-16 06:01:00 I have been down this road.

my answer was to get an IDE to CF adaptor from DSE ($20)
using a 1GB card i had a web server running for about a year.

problem was that the file system kept eating itself.
the first few months went well then I found the box dead every few weeks.
had to re-install it every time.

the new solution was a quite laptop seagate HD.

if you shop around you can get some very quite fans.
some high end cases have sound padding foam in them.

550116 2007-05-16 06:20:00 It doesn't take long to get a million operations up when the buffers are flushed every 5 seconds. The CF manufacturers don't promise infinite lifetimes. ;)

Quite quiet mechanical disk drives must do an enormous number of operations before they fail.

550117 2007-05-16 07:22:00 That is not what I really want, I want to be able to turn it on leave it running for a while (weeks) (the PC has no issue being on for weeks) and it be fine, no need for attention every week or so... and BTW DSE don't sell them anymore.

Yes, that is another one of the options.

I have no interest in buying a new case for it, I am wanting a cheap way to solve this. which the CF card isn't really...

So the CF card is out now...

550118 2007-05-16 07:41:00 Are you wanting to record Live TV direct onto your media box or just watch stuff that you have ripped or downloaded?

Do you want to stream your music selection from your media box to your speakers as well?

550119 2007-05-16 07:48:00 Record (it has a Hauppauge WinTV PVR350 tuner) and watch the videos on the TV (which I currently do anyway :p)

Yes, it is used to play music.

NOTE: this PC is CURRENTLY in use as my MediaBox, it is not future thing :p

Hmm, can't skimp on the CPU fan if I get a new one... 61°C under full load...

I take it your just wanting your current set up to run silently. My only suggestion would be a small well designed and well vented box with a suitable number of fans for cooling, or no fans if possible, just use convection cooling and don't over clock the system.

550121 2007-05-16 08:39:00 Yes.

There are only 2 fans in it and both I feel are needed. (PSU and CPU)

It is not and can't be OCed

In that case it would come down to internal hardware configuration set up to allow efficient airflow for cooling. The little Apple TV box runs silently.

550123 2007-05-16 08:52:00 Well the PCI cards are arranged as good as they can be for cooling efficiency The_End_Of_Reality (334)
