550069 2007-05-15 19:16:00 Was updating a friends laptop (Toshiba Satellite 1.6Ghz centrino, 768Ram, XP pro, SP2) and found out the it was very slow especially during bootup process. So i right clicked on my computer and properties and found that the cpu was only operating at 598Mhz!!! Did virus and spyware check, defrag, and other xp tweaking. Task manager show that the cpu usage is around 5% and around 300MB ram free. The speed jumps back to 1.59Ghz and than falls back to 500Mhz... keeps doing this. Couldnt find anything in the BIOS dealing with CPU speed changing. He told me that it started slowing down after he did a windows update.. :stare: Any help guys..??

PS. I dont have the lappy with me now but will contact him if anyone knows what could be the problem.

cheers

Have a look in the Control Panel under Power Options or there may be a Toshiba Power settings icon.

550072 2007-05-15 21:22:00 yeah to elaborate on what CyaBro said this is possibly quite normal. Laptops often adjust the speed of the CPU depending on demand to save power. You could load up the system with a CPU intensive application and the check the speed then and it should be at or close to the expected.

Treat the speed rating as a maximum. In the power management settings if you change from laptop to desktop it may force the cpu to full speed, but will use more power and flatten the battery quicker.

550073 2007-05-15 22:06:00 Thanks for that, will give it a try when i get hold of my mate. ronyville (10611)
550074 2007-05-16 03:01:00 Some laptops hold that info in the BIOS as well so check the settings there. xpd (11702)
