1415245 2016-01-30 21:30:00 When I started my laptop this morning I received the following message. “ Critical Error. Start Menu and Cortuna aren’t working Well try to fix it next time you sign in” Sign out now “ When I sign out , the laptop goes back to start up again and I get the same error message.
This happened two weeks ago also. I had made a “Repair USB backup so I started the pc with the USB and it started, re-installed Win10 and then deleted all my purchased Aps and only left some apps working.

Do you have any advice that I could follow rather than have to go through all the set up of my purchased apps again ?
The Laptop is an Acer Gateway NE56R running Win 10

1415246 2016-01-30 22:23:00 What Antivirus are you using ? some can and will cause the problem. Avast is probably the worst. If you have avast, uninstall it, then run the removal tool www.avast.com

If using another AV, uninstall that, see if it works OK with just the inbuilt AV.

What you can do is start the computer in safe mode, it should load normally, then restart normally, sometimes fixes it until it happens again.

If you don't know how to start in Safe mode, have a read 4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10 (www.digitalcitizen.life) Option 2 is what I use mainly.

If it works in safe mode then theres some program installed causing it ( usually) If it doesn't work & the AV is removed , then have a read of the following, you may have to roll up the sleeves and do some real repairs. Option 2 in Power Shell steps-to-fix-start-menu-and-cortana-arent-working/ (appuals.com)

1415247 2016-01-31 00:40:00 I do not see the option for the Shift/restart on boot up. There is no icon on the logon screen. However I have used the repair USB Boot and gone in Restore and am attempting to revert to a known good restore point. I also under the troubleshoot/ advanced Options did not have a “StartUp Settings “ icon” so amusing the System Restore option. I'll let you know how I get on - Thanks for help thus far. 1415248 2016-02-01 20:01:00 I tried the restore process using different restore point but each time got a message to say some files could not be loaded.
Any other advice?

Any other advice? Running system Restore sometimes wont do any good.

The suggestions are in my other post -- there are several ways to get into safe mode, one WILL work. If you didn't run all the suggestions then you haven't tried them all.. Did you read the piece about using PowerShell and try the commands given ?

Also you have not answered what AV you have, as one suggestion is to remove what ever you are using if you have one installed.

Theres a few other commands that can be tried, BUT unless you try all the options in that article first, then there's no point in giving them. ;)

1415251 2016-02-01 22:26:00 As I cant get past the logon screen ctrl-alt-del wont work for Powershell Swampy (2426)
1415252 2016-02-01 23:30:00 As I cant get past the logon screen ctrl-alt-del wont work for Powershell Hmmmm Something doesn't quite ring correct ?

if you cant get past the login screen then How did you run system Restore ?

Oh Well, force the ***** into safe mode :devil:devil This might sound a bit rough, but it works 99% of the time .

Turn on the computer - When it starts to boot, as SOON AS the blue windows symbol appears on the screen, push in and hold the power button - force it to crash / shut down -- Do this twice, on the third time it should be forced to load the Automatic Repair . You'll get a message saying Preparing Automatic Repair, then after a few minutes Diagnosing your PC ( words to that effect) Auto repair will fail ( it should anyway) - look for the button ADVANCED OPTIONS - click that then work through as per the other post: Trouble Shoot>Advanced options>Startup Settings>Restart

On reboot you should get 3 options for safe mode, press #4 and it should boot into windows in safe mode .

Once in safe mode see if the menu works .

If it does then you can either boot normally and see if the problem is fixed or try opening Powershell: Press Ctrl+Alt+del to open task manager, expand it out so you can get to file> New task, type in Powershell <press enter> Power shell will open,

simple one first: type in sfc/scannow <Press Enter> let it run through, see if it finds anything, if so reboot, see if its fixed .

The other powershell command: never tried it in safe mode so don't know if it will work or not, try at your own risk . (should work OK though)

Sounds like the OS is corrupted anyway so maybe not a lot to lose if it makes it worse .

1415253 2016-02-02 00:51:00 Got safe mode running now. for the first time using the method described in your last post. I am waiting to get to the menu button - Something is still running and I can not "click on the menu icon" I get massage "The application is not responding. The program may resound if you wait."
I have done the crtl-alt-del and got the Task Manager up. So I'm still waiting on the menu button.

I have done the crtl-alt-del and got the Task Manager up. So I'm still waiting on the menu button. Well at least thats some sort of progress :)

In task manager - under the General tab - have a look and see whats running, something may be sucking all the resources, if it is, then click it - end task.

There's a few things you can try: ( got these all written down, - not wring it all out fully) :p

The sfc /scannow command. if it says "Corrupted files found but couldn't be fixed" then you need to run

A power Shell or CMD /Admin command dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth Note: if it says it cant find the source, then I'll post the second option for it, you'll need your W10 DVD / USB drive that has the OS install.

if sfc doesn't find any faults run the above command anyway.

The power shell Command
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}-- Note, when running it will show some red errors, dont worry this is normal.

Just seen another that I have not tried (yet) on a broken machine:

Right-click at Start and click RUN
type SERVICES.MSC and press the enter key
right click on APPLICATION IDENTITY and select START You can also run that from the task manager- New task.

If none of that works, from startup ( Options before going into safe mode), select Refresh Your PC. (this basically does a repair install - Personally never had it work correctly)
