1415053 2016-01-25 22:57:00 Asking for some advice for a socket 775 Motherboard to replace one that has bulging and leaking caps in a HP a6660a(Foxconn Board,Q6700) purchased new 2009 ,I know socket 775 is old tech but don't want to spend to much and was happy with the existing set up

This is my first option or would it be better to go to a Socket 1155 & i3CPU?,there is plenty of choice out there so easy to get confused

Don't want to risk second hand stuff, this is a non gaming PC
Cheers

that might be the only option if you only want new, unless you can find some old stock. Add in new RAM . Buy everything from the one shop, its easier if theres an issue.
Power supply may be overdue for replacement as well. And by that stage you may as well buy a new PC or 'upgrade bare bones box' if you want 100% reliable

I would just go i3, at least. Dont muck about with old tech , unless you're happy to fiddle & tweak .
You will have to re-activate win & load some new drivers if replacing mb .

See there is some socket 775 boards listed with pricespy ,the power supply is 300watts so may not be suitable for an i3 combo

1415056 2016-01-25 23:31:00 The problem you may have is that your HP case might not be exactly ATX format.
Size would OK but HP often have proprietary connectors on their motherboards so a standard ATX/mATX board won't work.

1415057 2016-01-25 23:43:00 The board is micro ATX support.hp.com

You may be right as the Foxconn board was made for this model I remember reading

Might pay to E-mail and confirm it's available but it seems a new 775 board is still around

Ive swapped out HP mb's in the past. They usually have normal industry standard connectors on their normal size towers. Its more often the minis & micros where connectors & mb shape can get a bit weird.
Just check the powersupply sockets & the mb SATA connectors are standard , should be.

But.. connectors , sockets, cpu socket may be in strange places, board may be a strange shape or have non standard mount holes, so that a normal board will give headaches to get in the case & working.
CPU (fan) position on the new board may be in a place that wont fit in the HP
Chances are with a PAV tower it shouldnt be a issue.

Re-activation will be a ph call, its often done no questions asked. If asked, just say its a reload . Dont tell them new mb :)

But, the $ value of that PC is low.
I'd consider getting an ex lease PC if you dont want to spend. Ive seen ex lease i3's sometimes selling for approx $200 .

1415061 2016-01-26 01:36:00 1101 makes a good point, PBtech for example have stacks of ex-lease machines quite cheap at times. Some would be compatible with your Chip too so you could buy a cheap Core 2 Duo ex lease and drop your Quad core into it if you choose a compatible model. Whole C2D machines are often around $200-300 or less.

either way it's not worth spending too much on it.

1415062 2016-01-26 06:28:00 Been emailed back from Paradigm and been advised the board should not be a problem

I see the Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo - 1.3 - motherboard - micro ATX - LGA775 Socket - G41 can take either DDR 2 or DDR3, 8 Gig,might take the opportunity to up from DDR2 4 gig to 8 gig of DDR3

Would rather keep what I have as I find the HP Pocket Media drives handy to use and the board still utilizes USB2 also the card reader utilizes USB2 internal also
