1414564 2016-01-16 19:55:00 I have a monochrome Brother Laser printer and recently it gave me "Toner Low" message when printing
Without much thought I ordered a Toner cartridge which I have it now.

But now I realize the message of low toner will pop up for awhile before I absolutely have to replace it.Printer still prints fine
My question is is there a shelf life of unused toner cartridge just sitting ?

I am thinking I should return the cartridge and buy it when I actually run out but if the toner shelf life is long and it wont affect
print quality then I might as well just keep the new cartridge in its sealed bag unopened.

Cheers

1414565 2016-01-16 20:06:00 I believe that you can leave it on the shelf for a very long time without any problems provided that it is sealed and kept in a cool place. That is what it was doing at the business that sold it to you anyway. CliveM (6007)

I've had toners sitting around for 6 months after the Low Toner warning and replacements arrive ( thats if I buy more than 1 at a time), they are perfectly fine. All you need to do is give them a good shake to loosen any settled toner. How long it will be sitting about after the low warning will depend on how much printing you do, mine generally lasts 2-3 weeks, but some places it ca be the following day if a lot of printing is done.

According to Brother:

Please review the information listed below in reference to the shelf life of all l Brother Drum Units and Toner Cartridges:

DRUM UNIT: 2 years, or 6 months after its protective bag is unsealed.

TONER CARTRIDGE: 2 years, or 6 months after its protective bag is unsealed.

THIS SHELF LIFE IS GUARANTEED UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

Temperature: 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 40 degrees Celsius).

Humidity: 35 - 85%.

1414567 2016-01-17 06:59:00 I have just installed a "new" Brother toner cartridge which I bought 8 years ago, no problem.
If you get a 'low toner' message just remove the cartridge & give it a good shake to loosen the powder.
Shake the new one before you install it.
A friend rescued a Brother lazer printer from an inorganic collection. After shaking the cartridge it worked perfectly.

1414568 2016-01-18 00:55:00 Yep my brother multifunction is older than 2 years and still running on the original toner, can't imagine it lasts any longer in the machine than on the shelf. dugimodo (138)
1414569 2016-01-18 20:16:00 Humidity will make the toner dust more problematic.
If the toner is still sealed in its foil bag it sould be fine for ages.

You can get rid of the low toner bullsh by placing an opaque tape over the little window on either side of the toner cassette - then it should keep on printing right until the point that the pages fade, rather than deciding for itself when it will cease to operate.

1414570 2016-01-19 19:50:00 The problem now with the new brother printers is that they have a mechanical timer that rolls over after so many pagers and stop printing. You tube is your friend to tell you how to reset them.. paulw (1826)
1414571 2016-01-20 08:18:00 with older brother lasers, low toner is measured by printer shining light thru window on toner cartridge, if you put "non see thru" tape over one of the windows the warning dissapears (maybe for months) until you notice print fading. dbs (8785)

Yep done that as well on older printers. I like the HL1400 series that just kept going until they faded to nothing..

1414573 2016-01-22 06:35:00 Cheers guys for the tips. I will leave the new toner sitting in the sealed bag in that case and not return it. learning (5137)
