What is it with these clowns When you amalgamate you only need one head engineer, one financial officer, one HR manager, one systems manager. Sack the rest and keep the guys on the ground. I’m afraid Digby we can’t give Amalgamation any credit for the Harbour Bridge. You see the Bridge was opened in 1988 and amalgamation didn’t happen until a year later. However, we should thank Bob Owens who fought for the bridge for 17 years, some of them as mayor of both Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. A humorous part of Bob’s struggle was that his opposition always used the cost as a reason not to proceed, but when Bob said, in a fit of frustration, he’d build it himself and put a toll on it to recover his costs, they changed their mind claiming he stood to profit from the venture. Well the bridge was paid for in 13 years and the council thought they had a cash cow but alas part of the deal was that the Tolls must be removed once the bridge became debt free. And I guess we should thank Winston Peters also, because it was him that got the maintenance of the bridge and adjacent roads funded from the National Roads Board. So you see it is hard to justify giving Amalgamation any credit at all for the bridge or in fact anything else that I can think of. :) |
