1408430 2015-09-19 06:30:00 Personally, I don’t know of one single amalgamation that has been of any benefit to the Ratepayers.

Mount Maunganui was forced to amalgamate with Tauranga and the new Council promptly blew the funds that Mount Maunganui provided.

And, just to show there are no hard feelings, Tauranga now has a $1m bronze statue of “Hairy Maclary” and friends, 6744 which I suppose represents good value when compared to a $200k wire sculpture of male genitals strung across the street, like in New Lynn. 6745

Honestly, these bloody Politicians, be they Local or Central, know no bounds when it comes to wasting OUR money.

1408431 2015-09-19 06:39:00 Really, really like both Napier and Hastings. Initially it was Napier that grabbed me, however in more recent years have really begun to really appreciate Hastings a lot too. That is from me and the missus, we are Jaffas (and proud of it). My feelings are that amalgamation would have been the best option, but the people have spoken. A word from the wise - the Auckland DHB's without armtwisting (as far as I know) saw what could happen and decided to liaise and co-operate where it makes sense. When I retired the three DHB's has merged their IT, accounting and also had a common database. They have probably done much more since. If your councils have any sense and want to keep matters sensible they will look for similar common platforms, in all their interests. If they are antagonistic then the writing is on the wall. Just remember where you read this first. Misty (368)

And Paul wants to know why we should be surprised that a bunch of amateurs get things wrong.

Since our mayor got caught in rootergate he does not care anymore. Only one good thing came out of it for me. The previous Econazi West Auckland council had a bylaw stopping me from cutting down even trimming manukas that were shading the house. Mr Stihl dealt to that problem in 2 hours. They even had something of a dob in line or chainsaw alert. Now all the dumb trees have to be listed for protection.

1408439 2015-09-19 22:53:00 Tauranga and Mt Maunganui amalgamation.

Benefits - Harboue Bridge, many new motorways.

Disadvantges - Rates not reduced due to there being no staff cut backs.

What is it with these clowns

When you amalgamate you only need one head engineer, one financial officer, one HR manager, one systems manager.
Sack the rest and keep the guys on the ground.
