1414426 2016-01-14 04:37:00 A quiet word of warning, if you continue to use this overfull HDD
the likely result will be corruption of files and eventually complete failure to boot.

Had a fairly modern Windows 8.1 machine recently
The owner had kept on using it after Windows had warned them of no space left.

HDD corrupted, no boot and all files unrecoverable.

They didn't believe me and sent it off to a family member who is a 'Computer Whiz' ;)
(I just love that)

same result... not surprised.

Well I'm damn glad I didn't want to use it for something important. :D

Bit different here because Windows is not reporting the disk is full, in fact it is reporting there is 9.6GB available.

I have heard of the automatic "Page File" adjustment causing trouble so I used to set them all manually to a generous twice the RAM in this case 2 GB.

However, I still can't remember if CHKDSK gives a readout of what was fixed when it finishes. In the back of my mind I think it just moves straight onto boot Windows and if so I guess I'll never know what was wrong and taking so long to repair. :(

No surprises there mate -- knows facebook, plays games - cant fix real problems. They are a dime a dozen :D

Actually said this to one smart arse late last year -- he claimed he knew every thing, so I asked with a straight face -- "WHY did your mother call me then" ? Also asked what commands he had tried in power shell ? Funny he didn't answer, - vacant look as if to say whats that, then just went all red and walked away. :D

Thanks for that linw looks like just what I'm after. I'll report back later.

And for others following this saga I checked at Midnight and we were at 90% and at 6am Windows was loaded and everything seemed fine.

I've closed and started it a couple of times and it's much faster so I'm doing a defrag now before doing an image and then I'll proceed to checking the HDD.

Watch this space. :D

1414433 2016-01-14 19:24:00 Wiping it and starting again is not an option because of the old programmes and historical stuff on it, but copying it onto a larger drive may be an option.

Why? Can you not back up your data, and reinstall the old progs gain?
I'd start with cloning it anyway.

Going to do this with sons PC as soon as he buys the drive.

he has 3 drives.
C - 160GB
D - 1TB
E - 250Gb

Replace C and E with another TB, he hasn't a lot of room left.
