1408919 2015-09-26 05:24:00 Did sons oil change today on his 1993 Corolla. 16000km since the last one - 4 months ago.

It's about to tick over to 400,000km, on 399,650....
It hasn't used a drop of oil nor water.

Drives nicely.......

They make such awesome motors.......

1408922 2015-09-26 07:12:00 Trusty Toyota's. Changed oil/filter on my parents 99 Hiace a few months back, about 330, 000 km's, still goes great. I had to do the water pump, - they ran it for a while , without water-coolant change which corroded the impeller. When researching for a car on Trademe recently for my daughter, many had at least 300, 000 km, mid - late 90's with largely the same owners for a long time. They go seemly forever...

But wonder if it's good for Toyota, could limit sales, or sale cycles? if they make such a durable engine.

As they still sell loads of cars, I guess so.
Not everyone wants to hang on to the old ones....the first one I bought was being sold cause it had paint disease and "the wife can't drive around in that" was the comment.

I repainted it with Solarguard.

And....while the motors go and go - you still have to repair other bits.

Son has done 3 wheel bearings, clutch, suspension arms, wheels been replaced (not really a fail, just took the mags off), CV joints (2), radiator, and so on....

Husbands Toyota is All wheel drive and we have been told it's about $1000 to do his clutch.....so not really worth it, considering what he paid for the car.

Really? We're unlikely to own another ute anyway.....if we did it would be petrol and not a Surf, he liked the flat deck 2 door types.

I found:

en.wikipedia.org

"A commonly noted weakness on the 2.4 turbodiesel engine is a tendency to crack the cylinder head. Any episode of overheating may result in internal cracking of the head. Some were recalled in their domestic market and had the head replaced. The replacement "modified" head is the same head as fitted to the 2.8 normally aspirated diesel models."

I should amend the tile to Awesome Corollas....

1408928 2015-09-26 20:18:00 Talking about reliable motors, I knew a bloke in Zimbabwe whose Datsun diesel engined car fell apart from rust after about 350 000 k's. He converted the motor to power the well's pump on his farm. At the time I spoke with him he reckoned the engine had done the equivalent of 2.5 million k's! Greg (193)
