1408841 2015-09-25 01:53:00 Hi Team

I've been Web searching at Bunnings and other hardware suppliers for some specific items that I need for this weekend, and in 'Search Tools' I specified NZ so that I wouldn't get overloaded with irrelevant hits, however for some arcane reason Google insists in returning Oz results as well as NZ. There is no doubt that Bunnings Oz is bigger and carries a wider range of stock, but it p's me off no-end to locate exactly what I need, then see it is an Oz-only item.

I guess it is not Bunnings fault, but if you select NZ only, surely Google has enough digital nous to block all '.com.au' hits in the search results, even if it can't avoid searching for them? None of the usual methods of refining searches that normally work for me don't seem to work for Bunnings, and it certainly doesn't recognise NOT *.com.au or even 'NOT bunnings.com.au'.

I have no problem refining any other searches down to one or two options, so what gives with Bunnings Oz?

Cheers

Half true as Mitre10's are locally owned as part of a NZ/Oz franchise, started in oz and then came here.

1408847 2015-09-26 01:08:00 Could be result of URL structure geo-targeting (part of rich snippets schema structured markup (developers.google.com)). Website/company publishers from large websites might add these codes to tell Google "add us to search results if local results cannot be found". This may resolve for specific search queries - not just from ccTLD's (country specific domains). These codes are added in case if Google bots- choke trying to crawl 1000's of pages. So it's a form of Robot text - which Google prioritizes - to read/assess when crawling a site. Better to have additional layer of results relatively more meaningful than none at all for web searchers. So where else - closer to home - Aussie results.

You may alleviate this by: 1. Signing in - for better localization and personal targeting for better relevant results. However "privacy" concerns 2. As noted earlier by using the site.co.nz operator - and other advanced search operators (support.google.com) or- URL search parameters. I won't go there - Because - Google don't like searchers using them hard and fast. There are other search operators that are not officially published. Marketers/SEO's use them a lot. you will get booted out of Google for about 15 mins as I have found out.

Also Aussie - has a "hidden" Google data center (www.itnews.com.au) their - which I suspect, some NZ queries are directed to - and Bunnings - a major company - therefore high trust - massive and diverse back link profile, and possible social profile will have high rank in search results. Google has to provide answers if not specifically relevant - unless if you adopt alternative targeted search procedures as above. Read here (www.seobythesea.com) how Google might classify search queries - depending which data centre your query lands at -particularly if the nearest one is busy.
