| 551321 | 2007-05-20 05:41:00 | Can anyone tell me what the go is here? A mate of mine has travelled the world and to check his E-Mails or send Blogs he just goes to a McDonalds outlet and uses their wireless connection??? He tells me they dont mind and indeed encourage it??? He also says that quite often can get reception from street corners. Saves him dealing with Internet Cafes and its free??? Unfortunately, he cant help explaining how it all works because his notebook was set up for him and all he does is look for signal and hook on. Bingo. I just wonder if someone could give me a brief rundown on what exactly is required or direct me to some reading on the subject. Ta, :) |

| 551323 | 2007-05-20 05:49:00 | NO such thing as "Free" internet in NZ at this stage, although places like Starbucks cafe's, Wellington Airport and possibly Auckland Airport, The Chancery in Auckland CBD as well as Parnell and BP Service stations have a "WiFi" area within the the cafe or service station that can be accessed via your wireless modem or possibly Blutooth on your laptop. Most countries in the northern hemisphere have been MUCH faster to make this possible than slow old NZ. I think some places allow you to buy internet access time via coupons. San Francisco, California is virtually a wireless enabled city that has FREE access with support from local business and council. |

| 551325 | 2007-05-20 06:06:00 | Ok, so if you've got a Wi-Fi card in your Laptop you can sit at, or even outside Starbucks and connect to the Internet? Does this mean if you've got a signal you can hook on? There must be some security surely? |

| 551326 | 2007-05-20 06:41:00 | Ok, so if you've got a Wi-Fi card in your Laptop you can sit at, or even outside Starbucks and connect to the Internet? Yes, but you have to pay for it (depending on the hotspot, as they is both free & paid wifi hotspots), unless your a Xtra broadband or Mobile Broadband user then you have free access to any of telecom wifi hotspots in till 31 December 2007. You can find out more here: www.telecom.co.nz Does this mean if you've got a signal you can hook on? If it’s an Open wifi hotspot or you have to pay for access to the wifi hotspot then yes. There must be some security surely? If it’s a Open wifi hotspot, then there is No security, but if it’s a secure wifi hotspot & you have to enter a key to login then it a bit of security, but not that much, they way people say not to do banking etc… on a wifi hotspot I Hope this helps :) If you have any other questions let me know |

Yes, many McDonalds places around the world do offer wifi hotspots (You either have to pay or they are maybe free ones as well) He also says that quite often can get reception from street corners . Saves him dealing with Internet Cafes and its free??? Have a look at the link pctek posted as I think that is what your mate is doing there . |

Does this mean if you've got a signal you can hook on? There must be some security surely? Sounds like your friend is actually talking about a term called "wardriving" which pctek noted earlier. It basically means your friend is making unauthorised use of other peoples wireless internet services, in short he is STEALING. I gather you can actually be prosicuited by the police if your caught doing this. With regards to Starbucks and other places wifi, generally it is freely available to the general public when they pop in for a coffee or Latte and surf the net and check their email while lunching. In this situation the only security you would need would be on your own machine to stop people like your "friend" from stealing your bandwidth or information of your laptop ;) |

Its not FREE if you have Xtra broadband, because you've already paid for the broadband ;)(FREE and Telecom don't belong in the same sentence) |
