550881 2007-06-19 11:55:00 Windows will probably go crazy if you move the OS between machines. Most hardware nowadays comes equipped with unique identifiers which Windows will usually check. More than 5 hardware changes (off the top of my head) and it'll require re-activation. TGoddard (7263)
550882 2007-07-02 05:14:00 Making a copy of Windows before installing anything on the machines is no longer needed. But I would still like to make complete back-ups of the patched systems to save time in future should we suffer a disaster & have to start again from scratch with them. & then periodic backups to capture the updated virus definitions etc. installed on them. I'll be using DL DVDs for the job. Unless a single layer proves to be sufficient.

I've actually contacted and managed to persuade Dell to send us some factory install disks of WindowsXP SP2. In fact, the machines when given to us had the 'Home' version on it. I've convinced Dell to send us disks with the 'Professional' version, which actually I intend to wipe the hard drives of all x4 machines and install on them - the probability of the machines being used for gaming approaching 0%. Hell, I'll even deliberately delete the pre-installed Windows games if 'Professional' has them.

I don't suppose that anyone knows' how likely it is that Dell would be willing to donate accessories and MAYBE peripherals for our machines? Most of the money the organisation has must be raised ourselves. Most of that goes towards activities for the kids that this organisation is aimed at in order to retain their interest. Therefore, we don't have cash to throw around like there is no tomorrow!
It's to help try to maintain an image that is as professional as possible. So if we can get anything that would help us do things as efficiently as possible would be a great help!

Speaking of help, thanks to all those who've contributed advice so far.

There is the standard sticker that all manufacturers stick to their machine that has the part/machine ID# and then the Windows 'Genuine' sticker. Wouldn't it be under Control Panel>System?

550884 2007-07-02 06:23:00 Check out Acronis True Image 10, - it has a Clone Disk Feature which I think does what you are describing. I understand it will take your licenses across to the new PC however some of the licensing system may still report them as being expired because of the different hardware serials. Suggest you try a demo before you buy. Acronis is a good backup system as well. Sergio (928)

Acronis True Image is best for Imaging them, and will do incrementals thereafter too.

However what has Pro versus Home got to do with gaming?
Gaming is irrelevant.
You use Pro if you want the domain capabilties and Home if you don't.
Not that it matters, you can use Pro even if you don't want domain.
