551331 2007-05-20 09:41:00 Hmmm, thanks guy's, I think I'm getting the picture?

I've got an old Compaq Presario 2500 here which seems to have a spare pcmcia slot and USB port so which one is the best for Wi-Fi or doesn't it matter?

I think it's got Blue Tooth on board but that's a different frequency isn't it?

So many questions.

551332 2007-05-20 09:53:00 Depends if the USB is 1.1 or 2. If 1.1 PCMCIA is most probably better. Speedy Gonzales (78)

Is there a way to tell what a port is speedy? (i.e 1.1 or 2)

Go to device manager / USB controllers. See if theres an enhanced host controller entry under this entry..

If this is there, its most probably USB 2.

Got the following Speedy:

I’ve got a USB Composite Device
3 USB Root Hubs
2 VIA REV 5 or later USB Host Controllers
1 VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller

As there are only three connection sockets, two on the back and one on the side I guess the one on the side might be the USB 2.0 one?

551336 2007-05-20 10:34:00 The enhanced entry might be USB 2. Plug something thats USB 2 into it. See what happens.

And see if a message like this device can run faster ... appears. Then it maybe USB 1.1

551337 2007-05-20 12:15:00 USB 2.0 Full Speed = 12MB
USB 2.0 High Speed = 480MB

551338 2007-05-20 13:12:00 The above rates are Mbits/sec, not MBytes/sec. The 12Mbits/sec option is fullspeed USB 1.0/1.1, not USB 2.0. Erayd (23)
551339 2007-05-21 00:51:00 Well I’ve plugged a USB2 Pendrive into all the USB Ports without getting any messages about the Device could work faster .

So, I tried Belac Advisor and it told me exactly what Device Manager told me .

But, Everest tells me I have two USB 1 . 1 Ports and One USB2 Port .

I’d only be guessing but I suspect the one on its own on the side of the machine would be the USB2 .

That being the case, I’ll buy a Wi-Fi USB2 Dongle and see what happens .

Thanks everyone for your help .
