551195 2007-05-20 11:59:00 Just an idea have you tried booting with the 40 GB drive disconnected. If it is failing it can slow your system to a crawl even if it is not your boot drive.

Tried running without that drive, with no change. The odd thing is that installs on 3 different drives have all come to the same problem (at different stages). Yet I can still hook up the 2gigger and everything runs fine (using it for this post) maybe because I haven't updated it completely (still SP1). If I hook up either of the other 2 drives the systems won't run properly. It's not the drives because I can access all files on them from this OS setup, and the problem is consistent - once it's there the system just crawls. Flip back to this 2gig and all is well.

Thanks for your reply.

551196 2007-05-20 12:05:00 Yeah...that's a good thought too...if you could, get the voltage readings from your PSU while this is going on. You will need a digital meter..don't try an analog as it'll also load the system just getting a reading.

Hopefully this isn't the problem...other than the fact that once you find the problem, you've got the cure in sight.

Tried to get reading but multimeter has got flat battery grrrr! Checked voltages on other occasions and although under 5 and 12 volt (4.83 and 11.79 from memory) there is no problem with drives running/reading and writing. Also I am replying on the same PC having booted from a 2gig drive running only at SP1.

Thanks for your suggestion

551197 2007-05-20 12:14:00 What do u mean by copied data back to it after u formatted it?

What data? Hopefully u dont mean programs that were already installed.]

I meant my documents and other files. I have just converted the 40gig to store this "data" after I nuked the shonky W2K setup

[You did jumper the hdd's properly didnt u?? One as master and one as slave?]

Yes. I've got one usable setup on a 2gig (using it now) and and I can connect 2 drives with faulty setups (20 and 13gig) and read files, virus scan etc with no access problems. They just don't run the OS properly

[A bit more ram might help. 256MB isnt that much for XP.]

Err, I'm having problems with Windows 2000 ;-)

[Well u could try hijackthis, but if you've formatted and all, (a clean install), I doubt you'll have malware/spyware.]

Exactly, I've only connected to Windows update, Comodo Firewall etc.

[You did do a clean install didnt u?? Not install Windows over Windows?]

Clean installs on formatted and chkdsk-ed drives. Then SP4 install and some updates (to point of slowdown problem)

Thanks for your reply

551198 2007-05-20 12:19:00 Ooooooooooooooooh! I saw an Amiga in your profile! Which model?

A1200/030/50 in Power Tower, custom-made A1200/030/40 tower, A3000/030/25, A4000/040 Warp Engine, standard A1200 desktop/030, plus about 5 or 6 A500s in the shed, 3 or 4 A2000s.......

551199 2007-05-20 12:22:00 If you can run Task Manager, allbeit very slowly, you must be able to see which process is using all the system resources.
Which one is it?

99% system idle ;-) I guess that's why it's so sloooow. I'm sure it will run any program, if you have weeks to wait. eg System Mechanic ran for 36 hours before it finished. Opening a window would take minutes.

551200 2007-05-20 20:23:00 I give up....maybe it's slow electricity

Voltages look OK, HDDs are being tested individually and still no good. TaskManager is reporting all's well...Hmmmm? Are you sure you actually have an OPSYS installed? lol

I had a "dead" tower from a friend once that when I opened it up, a large dead beetle (no, not our Beetle!) fell out.

The owner poked it and said: "No wonder it won't work, the engineer's dead".

551201 2007-05-20 21:35:00 I'd be inclined to uninstall some (or all) of the upgrades, then put them back one at a time .

I uninstalled all updates from the 20gig install and it made no difference . It seems that once it's screwed up that's it! Whether the fault stems from hardware (doesn't seem likely because I can run for days on the 2gig) or software, it's as though something is corrupted in the OS and it can no longer control the system or processor properly . I had expected to go on the 'net and find that there was a "bad" update and thousands of people had the same problem :groan:

Thanks for your suggestion . I don't think I'm going to get to the bottom of this . I might just have to start all over and hope it doesn't happen next time .

Actually, I just woke up and it was all a bad dream .

Hey, no, the problem is real. I don't think I could have made it up if I wanted to.The comment was a joke in response to your light-hearted comment about whether I really had an OPSYS installed. I wouldn't insult you when you were so welcoming.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, perhaps I should have put a smilie at the end. I think written posts, emails etc. are wide open to misunderstandings like this, if you are not very careful.

Anyway, I appreciate all your efforts, believe me. You can't come into a forum like this to stir up trouble. There may be people in here who would know who I am by looking at my profile (this is a small country).
I've genuinely come for help - I think my problem is peculiar to my setup by the looks of it, so I don't think I'll get a solution.
