550784 2007-05-19 21:49:00 Maybe you could give her a quick "web safe" PC user course and enlighten her about the down side of all the unnecessary crap that she insists on loading on her PC which is slowing it down- a bit of a "father daughter" talk. You would be amazed at what people don't know about using PCs and the Internet.

This site is a good place to start
www.netsafe.org.nz

Having read the advice submitted by various writers, I decided I had better check my own computers first - and was shocked. OK some of the programs I recognise (ie Office - which I NEVER use anyway and can do without) but there is a lot of stuff there that seems to be something to do with various functions connected with Windows and turning them off frightens me beyond believe. I suppose I could turn them all off and then see what happens and try turning them back on if and when I feel I may need them. But I feel that its reaching the point where grandchildren need to be asked to take over this job instead of me.
I'm past my "use by date".

550785 2007-05-19 22:23:00 Glad I could offer some helpful advice.
I was totally shocked when I scanned my dads PC and saw the amount of crapware and spyware that had installed itself on his machine. I had originally only gone around to my parents place to show my them how to attach a jpg file from their digital camera to an email which lead to them asking me how to get the photos off the camera and burnt onto CD. My parents recently got a Telecom BB connection but leave their modem turned OFF to "save bandwidth" ???(They are very old school). They used to have IE on their PC which runs Win2k but now they use Firefox :)
Anyways, I was driven by curiosity to do the usually scans after downloading a "free" CD burning app since my dad's one didn't work and I wanted to make sure that there was no dodgy stuff on their machine.......year right! (Its Windows...DUH!)

I don't have any of their Window's associated spyware problems on my new iMac. ;)

If you only rarely use MS Office you could consider getting OpenOffice for PC from www.OpenOffice.org it is FREE and compatible with ALL MS Office formats. I also use Firefox on both PC and Mac as it stops a lot of the internet based crap from getting on to the version of XP Pro that I run from time to time on my iMac.

550787 2007-05-19 23:13:00 Because you don't have to pay for it. Alternatively just uninstall MS Office. winmacguy (3367)

Got it. And I use the spreadsheet in it for one particular job only. I do tend to bore people with my love of MSWorks (as long as it is a pre 2000 version)which I reckon for most users is far superior to either Office or OpenOffice. But I do have to use WORD for anything I intend to be published. And very occasionally I find that WORD is best when I want to insert something complex. Just to be awkward I also use ASEASYAS spreadsheet (if you don't recognise the name it is an old DOS program). For some jobs it handles work I have never been able to run on Excell or any similar SS (including MSWorks).

I love MSWorks mainly because of its simplicity, its database which is contrast to most databases on the market not only works but is incredibly simple to use.

550790 2007-05-20 04:19:00 That's a point but in fact I didn't mention that my daughter is a grandmother.
I reckon she would be a bit niggled if I did what you suggested. (She is bigger, younger and fitter than me.)
TomAnd you're not allowed to spank her now, Tom. :D

MS Works does well. All most people would use or would need.
The database in Works does not use tables like Access or DB for example.

I have office 2003 and Works Version 8. I use Excell for spreadsheets. I use Publisher to do web sites.

I gave up on MS Office a while back because
A Its bloated and,
B You have to pay for it
C For what I do, Openoffice does just as well as MS Office without the gloss.
