| 551782 | 2007-05-21 13:16:00 | It seems my external harddrive isn't detecting so I took the desktop harddrive apart. The harddrive case light comes on but I do not hear any sound coming from the harddrive Is it the case thats causing this issue or the harddrive? |

The harddrive case light comes on but I do not hear any sound coming from the harddrive Is it the case thats causing this issue or the harddrive? Sorry. I read your post a few times. I am now very confused. The EXTERNAL hard drive was not detected so you disassembled the hard drive inside the desktop? Or what? Are we talking about a hard drive (external) inside a USB or firewire case? |

| 551784 | 2007-05-21 13:45:00 | The computer was not detecting the external 3.5 inch harddrive but the usb casing indicator light was on.I couldn't hear any sound from the harddrive so I disassembled the harddrive.Took the casing apart then I plug the power adaptor and usb cable in.I was correct. The harddrive wasn't spinning or making any noise but the casing power light was on and the fan was spinning Is this a casing or a HDD issue? Its a usb harddrive I called it desktop harddrive cos it was 3.5 inch as notebook harddrive are 2.5 inch |

Have you tried the 3.5 drive inside your computer using a ATA or SATA cable as a slave? Or jumpered or cable select depending on what other drives you have? Leave the USB case out of the equation for this minute. |

| 551786 | 2007-05-21 14:09:00 | No.I want to try it that way But im not quite sure the cabling inside the pc and really don't wanna mess around the inside so I think I might go to a shop to try But normally a harddrive thats broken should make a clucking sound right and not completely dead? |

No, that is only for the read/write head is gone or the platter is gone it catches on things which causes the knocking, this knocking will not happen if the platter doesn't even spin up which is what yours is not, and the read/write head doesn't move it won't knock... Sheesh what is it? HDD death month? so many threads on HDDs dieing :stare: |

Its not hard. Look at the way the internal HDD is connected. Then connect the external HDD the same, but use the DVD cabling. That will tell you. And no noises are not the only thing to indicate a dead HDD. What brand is the HDD? Rubbish I bet........ |
