551693 2007-05-21 08:20:00 I'm planning on stepping up to Core 2 Duo. So, with my spec below, I need to change my motherboard from a 945 to at least a 965.

I'm looking at the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 motherboard, because it is cheap and reviews have found it is decent and good value for its price.

Problem is, its 12V power connector (that supplies power to the CPU) is only a 4-pin, while my PSU only has an 8-pin connector.

What can I do about this? Is there some kind of adapter I could buy to change the PSU's 8-pin connector to a 4-pin so I could fit it on the motherboard?

And if there is such adapters, is it recommendable and stable for the PSU? Can someone link me to a NZ shop site that sells one?

My Task PSU has double 12V rails, and I fear that I may overload one rail. Can that happen?

Look closely. It separates into 2 x 4 pin connectors.

551695 2007-05-21 08:49:00 You can quite safely plug the 8-pin connecter into the 4-pin socket and leave the other 4 pins unconnected. You might need to cut the plug in half to do this. The plug is just two normal 4-pin 12V ATX plugs joined together.

Just make sure both wires on the clip side are yellow, and both wires on the other side are black, and that the clip is on the same side of the tab (it might not actually align with the tab because it's twice as big).

Edit: Beaten - if it separates its even easier :p

Oh, and does it actually matter which 4 holes I connect the 4-pin connector to?

No, as long as the yellows (+12V) are where they should be and the blacks (Ground) are where they should be.
