551675 2007-05-21 01:45:00 I found this running on my Dell just a few minutes ago: wowexec.exe.

I like to play the card game called Spider Solitaire once in a while, and I guess this is a 16bit program..right?

So..that, if it is true, doesn't bother me as it was just a leftover from when I did play the game...but that was two days ago..what's wowexec.exe doing staying through two or three reboots anyway?

And another thing..there's a space before the first part of the program as it's listed in the Task Manager..is that OK?

Like this: _wowexec.exe where the underscore represents a space in the name.

A quick Google search brings up some results if you haven't already been there, at least one entry refers to 16bit programs on WinNT, don't know if this is what you are after.

551677 2007-05-21 03:38:00 Well...I tried to invoke that entry again by going back and playing Free Cell and Spider..but it won't appear..so I am suspicious now. SurferJoe46 (51)

OK . . Here's where I went:

These are Micro$oft's instructions . . .

1 . Start Task Manager . To do so, right-click a blank spot on the taskbar, and click Task Manager .
2 . On the Processes tab, note the contents of the Image Name column .
3 . If any 16-bit programs are running, you see an entry for Ntvdm . exe, which is the virtual DOS machine that is provided by Windows XP . You also see wowexec . exe (the Windows on Windows subsystem), and the executable name of each 16-bit program that is running in that WOW virtual machine . As a helpful visual aid, wowexec . exe and the 16-bit executable file names are indented .

I started Spider Solitaire (as a for instance) and opened the TM . . .

The 16-bit program was there alright, but not in the same way as the one that caused the question appeared before .

Last time I saw the indented line (Micro$oft's term), there were no values in any of the column concerning it . So, that's basically what I am concerned over discovering .

If I have run a 16bit prgm, and then shut it down in the same boot-que, then there either should be NO entries for the 16bit prgm or there should be a full listing including the vm too . . right? Just being there as a partial entry in the TM is kinda strange .

I am still suspicious of what I saw before .
