551425 2007-05-20 12:43:00 Hi My win xp pro will not boot up. It starts then stops and displays, Windows will not start as "system" file in c:windows \system32\config is faulty or corrupt. Insert orginal cd and push "R" at first screen? My PC didnot come with a win xp CD. I presume the R is to start recovery console? which it expects to find on my CD I dont have. System file is large 5,242,880 Any thoughts re a fix.

Thanks

551426 2007-05-20 22:14:00 Well, you'll need an XP CD from somewhere. Or a live Linux CD, by the looks of it. Speedy Gonzales (78)
551427 2007-05-20 23:35:00 Did your system come as pre installed? You may find the "XP CD" is on a seperate partition. What happens if you just press "R"?
Can you boot into safe mode (hold down F8, or F% on some systems, to take you to startup options)
Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

551430 2007-05-21 13:26:00 Tried another win xp but unable to get R to work. have done lots of things and one was to copy another win xp system file rename my old one and load it into config dir. I now have my win xp system loading up to the login screen. But will not go any further as it has errror code with "Unable to work out registration verification. Will check out error code on MS site tomorrow. The old file was approx 8 gig but the new one only 6 gig approx so lots missing. Have tried to open it up but no luck so far and unable to get rR console to run at this stage. Advocar (1098)
551431 2007-05-31 12:04:00 Success at last . Have had it fully back for 2 weeks now with no problems and have not lost any work or functionality .

Although the initial error was shown as inability to verifly
PC orthenticity and windows protection it required no updating to allow windows and office to run again once I understood and carried out the repair instructions .

I did a lot of searching and the following sites if you read them and print them out so you can check each section as you do it you will survive .
. broadcastnewsroom . com/articles/viewarticle . jsp?id=8658-1" target="_blank">webcast . broadcastnewsroom . com
This one has a lot of detail, 14 pages, with every keystroke explained . Just after the "Section Addendum Note" the following copy c: etc has 3 errors on the 2nd 3rd and 4th line etc\repair\SYSTEM you need to remove them . Shoud be repair\software C etc |next line sam | next line security .
In essence you need an XP boot disk that has the repair program etc on it . You will be asked to use the OLD MSD type command line functions . I suggest you teach yourself the basic functions . search online for MS help . Then check that the dir / copy etc commands you need to create are created as per the instructions . Check that your Files with the same names are in the directories first though and back them up as if you make an error and delete them before you check they have been placed in a temp dir that may be the end . As I had a file named tmp I had to add another character to allow the copy / dir lines to work correctly If not commands will not work as per typed instructions .

Microsoft has a very tidy example / option as well but lacks the detail of how to actually do each section if you are a greenhall .

As mentioned in the article one should back up the 5 files in the system dir that the article recovers from a secret place then it would be easier . It also highlights the benift of creating restore points as they are needed and saves a lot of workarounds .
