551448 2007-05-20 11:54:00 Hey guys,

So I fried my dads drive, and Dannz sent me one exactly the same, and swapping the logic boards did nothing, as the motor didn't even spin up. So I was thinking bout pulling the platter out of my dads one, and putting it in the one Dannz sent me.

But I have a few questions as to the likeliness of screwing it more:

Are there any anti-static gloves I can use instead of latex gloves?
Can it be done successfully without being in a medical grade cleanroom?

I believe I can avoid damaging the platter if it is a single platter and the top magnet of the r/w head comes of nicely.

Anyone reckon it can be done/has done it before?

551449 2007-05-20 12:18:00 I very much doubt if you could pull it off.
Assuming just pulling apart the enclosure doesn't ruin the drive, any dust/particles in the air that settles on the platters would probably ruin the magnetic coating on the platters the first time it spins up...

It would certainly be the absolutely LAST thing I would do. Only try it if all other options are exhausted.

If the data is important, you might like to try professional data recovery, although that can cost quite a bit of $$

Still, if for some strange reason you do decide to try and pull it off, I wish you the best of luck!

551450 2007-05-20 13:20:00 One single microscopic dust particle will wreck the platter, as it will interrupt the airflow, which is all that keeps the head above the magnetic surface.

You will only achieve that repair in a laboratory grade "clean room"
