551999 2007-06-21 06:22:00 As I said earlier in this thread - it's not the installer! - you can dowload it no problem, its when you run it that you will recieve that message of being "incompatable"....
I have just tested and used the same installer that tells me it's not "system" compatable on this machine, to succesfully install it on another machine that has exactly the same "system" (xp pro) installed, but WITHOUT THE SP2 UPDATES
So I would say there's a "security" update somewhere between then and now thats been a bit sneaky and recognises wmp10 being installed and throws the "incompatabilty" popup message and blocks the install

THIS I believe!

That's gotta be it...I will try a new install without SP-2 this weekend on another Dell Dimension 750 and see how it goes. Then I'll update the WMP9 to WMP10 and THEN get SP-2. That means no slipstreamed XP/SP-2 this time.

Hopefully I can get it done this way.
Woohoo...maybe an end-run around Billy-O! :badpc:

He's getting deeper and deeper into my skivvies  (knickers in NZ-speak).

552002 2007-06-21 07:29:00 Yeah . . but I gotta spend time with my brain in gear before my TROUT SAFARI . . . did I mention that I am going on a TROUT SAFARI?

I am going on a TROUT SAFARI . . . for three weeks in the middle of August (NZ-speak = winter) .

. . . and once and for all . . . I gotta just know what this WMP10 bollix is all about too . . . . . . . I mean . . . . . . ya know what I mean? :waughh:

BTW: I am going on a TROUT SAFARI for three weeks (3 weeks, NZ-speak) I expect to meet some TROUT and some more TROUT .

552003 2007-06-21 07:36:00 SurferJoe I have batch (holiday house) 20 minutes from the Tongariro River which just happens to be one of the greatest Trout fishing rivers on the planet. The Tongariro feeds into Lake Taupo which is also home to many trout and is located about 3 1/2 hours from Auckland.
Try iTunes for your music and safe yourself and unnecessary amount of grief.
:)

Did you say something about a trout fishing safari?

552004 2007-06-21 07:46:00 In fact if you Google NZ Trout rivers you will find the Mataura is supposed to be THE trout river.

I couldn't care less, trout tastes like river mud.

Well pctek either yours was badly smoked or your just someone who doesn't appreciate fine fish or the chosen trout wasn't that great to start off with. Smoked trout is wonderful:)

552006 2007-06-21 08:22:00 mmm... I just downloaded and installed Windows Media Player 10 fine.... Was using 9 before.

Admittedly, I have something running (I don't know what) that is blocking me from manually installing windows updates, even though if I set them to install when shutting down they install okay.

552007 2007-06-21 16:28:00 Maybe they detect my ISP or something..but I cannot get any results from downloading and then INSTALLING WMP10.....The download happens OK..it just pops in with the error message during the install from no matter what site I try. SurferJoe46 (51)
552008 2007-07-02 05:48:00 OK . . Update:

I formatted my poor old workhorse/testbed Dell Dimension 750 XP-Pro, this time without SP-2 until the very end .

WMP9 is the default player and I previously went and downloaded WMP10 into a ZipDrive disc and just installed it from there . . . from the Old Opsys site that was suggested, and THEN put in SP-2 and all the rest of the updates except the one that allows for digital sigs to be sent from my puter . . . guess what?

No more denials . . but that stoo-ooo-pid bubble is back asking for permission to upgrade to WMP11 . . . . .

I might try this from a slipstreamed XP/SP-2 also . . it might've been faster . . but I am retired and have all the time left in the world for this sortta garbage! (Yeah . . sure!)

This was, however done on a very fast DSL link . . so I don't know if any of youse guys on dial want to get this far into things .

Another thing: I did all this behind my Linksys Router/Firewall, so I didn't get hit by any drive-by viruses . . .

:badpc: <pix of man talking calmly to/about Mr . Bill!>

. . . and if Linda's reading this . . . thanks for sticking with my instructions so far! (she knows who she is)
