551580 2007-05-22 11:01:00 Thanks dugimodo. I have a Thermaltake PSU in there currently - I think its 430W.
Just unsure whether it will have the necessary connections for a more modern m/board :)

At this stage, if my current board is dead, I will probably go for a 7900GS instead of the 8xxx range. So it sounds like the current PSU should hold up ok.

Anything new will more than likely require a 24-pin PSU, and your current PSU will most likely be 20-pin if it's for socket A

Look at the current supplied more than anything else. my enermax liberty (400watt) supplies 32A on 12v, and I have seen a PSU (also rated 400 watt) that came with a $50 case that gave 12A on 12v (in fact it probably can't even manage that)

Of course it was not of good brand, but still - It's pretty obvious that watt ratings on most PSUs still mean nothing!

I had a thermaltake purepower 420Watt, from memory it was 14A on 12v, still not good enough.

551581 2007-05-22 22:07:00 Thanks for all the advise people :)

I have pretty much done all the testing I can do with the old board & have concluded that it's toasted.

Since no new socket A stuff is available (not surprising), I have ordered a Core2Duo 6420 + board, memory, gfx & psu which will hopefully last a while :)
