551951 2007-05-22 07:45:00 Hello all

My laptop has recently got very slow when booting up. I went back to the April PC World and found the bit on page 48 about stopping unnecessary start ups. From there I followed the link to processlibrary.com and identified a couple of things i didn't need

A new link lead me to download Uniblue's Speedupmypc and registrybooster.

I always get twitch about fiddling with system and registry settings even tho' I creat restore points every step of the way.

Has anyone had experience with these programs? Are they really safe to use? Indeed, are they effective?

Thanks

551953 2007-05-22 13:37:00 i agree, how old is the machine? i strongly recommend ccleaner, defrag and ram. works nearly every time, unless it's a mac. if it's a mac, well good lcuk, but i see an expensive replacement.

also consider closing applications you don't use. a good example is msn messenger; if you don't regularly use is, why have it eating 16MB of ram standing by? you can tell it to not start at startup.

and don't use norton or mcafee. they're resource hogs, and there are plenty of free and subscription services that work just as well without the ridiculous sytem load and bloatware

551954 2007-05-22 13:54:00 I don't think that 'Uniblue' will do anything. until you pay for it ... Sure it'll scan for you, tell you that you've got all sorts of trouble ...for free. But, ask it to do something and then comes the "Pay Now" bit !
STEER CLEAR OF IT

551955 2007-05-22 14:33:00 Tuiruru; When I enquired about those 2 products I was told that I should stay clear of them and was reccomended to just do regular defrags and cleans with ccleaner.

Hope this helps

551956 2007-05-22 16:28:00 if you try running those registry scanner progs and some other spyware etc scanners on a NEW install of your o/s which has NOT been online it's very interesting cause many of the 'paid' ones that 'find' lots of probs will still find lots of probs even on a new/clean/non connected install......lol....... drcspy (146)

Read carefully before doing anything, as he says. XP services config "Safe" is the best to use.

551958 2007-05-23 07:17:00 I used to use Uniblue and it dint really help. Heard a lot of stuff about it being unsafe and all so I took it out. CCleaner, and AWC are a lot better and much safer. beeswax34 (63)
