2007-05-21 08:58:00 | Hey, I would like to backup a Windows 2000 (SP4), onto an external Hard Drive. I have only got two USB 2.0 ports, one of which is my keyboard plug. I have a free USB 2.0 plug and a free USB 1.1 Plug.My Hard Disk size in the computer is 20GB at about 19GB near full at the moment. What have other people got? Where did you get it? How much (price and quality) was it? Thanks Justinsg

2007-05-21 10:53:00 | I just got one of these (www.dlink.co.nz) and a couple of 320GB HDDs. Just set them up as JBOD rather than RAID because I need the space. It's a NAS device rather than USB. Works great. All I need now is a Gigabit switch to utilise the gigabit network port on it. I got it and the hdds from one of my suppliers for about $600.

2007-05-21 11:30:00 | I put a 5400rpm Seagate 2.5" laptop drive in a USB caddy and found that many computer's USB ports couldn't handle the current drain. It's unused right now as I have nothing to put the drive in :(. Either that or it is very sensitive to voltage, and only works in PCs with well regulated power supplies (which definitely excludes mine!).

2007-05-21 19:03:00 | I purchased an EXTERNAL HD case and fitted my own drive . See here . . . dynamix . co . nz/index . html?VS=p&G=EE-U2-350U&P=&ID=4649917" target="_blank">www . dynamix . co . nz But there are many other brands available . I use ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE as my backup medium and this combination works a treat and has saved my bacon many times . Unless portabality is vital, stay away from 2 . 5" laptop drives They are much slower and take up 2 x USB ports to get enough power to drive them . I have used the proprietry external HD's like Western Digital and Seagate and they work well but I would recommend you that try and find out how well the backup software works, because ACRONIS is better IMHO . One point that many forget . The Namebrand Case and drive combos have a 1 year guarantee . Buy a separate case and a drive of your choice and the drive has a 3 year Guarantee usually . :D This also means you can fit a second hand drive if you have one available . One idea, why not buy a larger drive for your computer and clone the data (using something like Acronis of HDCLONE) then fit the new drive and use the old drive as the backup drive for a while at least . This is exactly what I did . My main drive was an 80gb and the backup was an old 20gb Then I purchased a 160gb and used the 80gb as my backup . The extra space means I can easily keep 3 or 4 dated backups at weekly intervals . This also saved me when I found my last backup included a bug I was not aware of until a few days afterward . I was easily able to restore the previous one . BTW I take daily backups using different backup software of data that changes all the time like emails etc

2007-05-21 23:50:00 | Thanks for all of the suggestions. Keep posting and using the poll. My computer is 4 going 5 years old so i don't want to go inside it to put a new drive in. I also would not backup every day but probably every month. Thanks Justinsg

2007-05-22 00:04:00 | I have an Iomega Value Series 320GB external drive which is working fine . $216 from Ascent . Nice points = external power supply, mostly aluminium case so no fan and from looking at it via device manager I think it's a Seagate HDD. However came with no backup software at all | KatiMike (242) | |
2007-05-22 02:46:00 | Mine's a 20Gb Creative Yion External Slim USB 2 HD in aluminium case. It cost $120 incl GST. I backup automatically using SyncBack at 1 am every morning. I've had it for more than a year now, with no problems.
